Ash cloud update

Tens of thousands of travellers were left stranded this week as the ash cloud from the Chilean Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano made its second lap of the globe. Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar domestic flights from all major airports in the east of Australia were cancelled at varying times over Tuesday and Wednesday. Domestic flights resumed on Thursday, though the airlines cancelled all flights to New Zealand on Friday and Saturday. The knock on effect of the cancellations is likely to see delays at many airports continue for several days. Passengers have been further frustrated by the fact that many international carriers are still taking off and landing at the affected airports while domestic flights are cancelled. However, international flights can still operate as they are able to vary their route and avoid the ash cloud while flights on shorter routes cannot.
