From booking flights to making sure you have packed correctly, the latest smart phone apps aim to make travel easier.


1.Trip deck

Price: FREE

This application aims to be the complete itinerary manager allowing you to manage your hotel reservations, car rentals, flights, cruises, restaurants, meetings and more with easy-to-read Trip Decks for each itinerary. You can also get easy access to check-in times, seat number, confirmation numbers, gate info, baggage claim, integrated airline contact info and more.

Highlights: Comes complete with an interactive trip map and offline mode for use in flight.

Downsides: There are extra costs for add on features.

2. FightTrack pro

Price: A$10.49

This application is a great solution for getting detailed flight information in a hurry. It contains information about terminal maps and weather delays. It gives you everything you need to manage your flights in real-time. With over 5,000 airports listed and over 1,400 airlines available, it’s the most comprehensive way to monitor your flights.

Highlights: The data is available fast, it’s accurate and the interface is easy to navigate and it has an offline mode for in-flight use.

Downsides: If there’s a delay, cancellation or other problem with your flight, there’s no way for FlightTrack Pro to tell you unless you to go into the app.

3. Currency

Price: Free

The Currency iPhone app keeps you up to date with how valuable your money is at any point in time (before fees). The app’s conversions and calculations are in line with real time international currency markets thanks to the iPhone’s Internet connection.

Downsides: Improper use of singular and plural words for currency, which may annoy the odd grammar god or two.

4. Kayak

Price: Free

Kayak is the smart phone era’s map for travellers, featuring information on flights, hotels, car rentals, nearby attractions, tours, and even a packing list.

Highlights: It won “People’s Voice Winner” for Best Mobile Travel Offering in the 2011 Webby Awards.

Downsides: There’s no function for searching First and Business class flights.

5. Trip Journal

Price: A$2.99

This application works like a high-tech journal. It allows you to document your holiday through the inbuilt GPS route-tracking function. All your trips can be stored within the app and played back at any time. The trips can be easily exported to Facebook, Twitter and E-mail to share with friends and family.

Highlights: Photos, videos, comments and blog entries can be documented and shared.

Downsides: location features are only available in Wi-Fi spots.

6. Packing pro

Price: A$2.99

This application is great for the absentminded traveller. It creates a packing list based on the number of adults, children and days of holiday. It allows you to build lists from an Expert Help feature, or from scratch. There are sample lists available and lists can also be customised to your trip type. You can include notes, quantity and even weight of items. This application makes packing fun with various layouts, colours and fonts. You can also check off items as you go.

Highlights: It takes into account temperature, destination and even laundry preferences. It is easy to use and will ensure you don’t forget to pack the essentials.

Downsides: functionality on an iPhone is difficult to organise.
