CHATEAU YERING

Overview
Built in 1854, Chateau Yering has been carefully restored and transformed into a five-star boutique hotel retaining many of the original period features. The library, Chinese room and lounge are in their 1854 form with original fittings. The heritage-listed mansions sits on 250 acres bordering the Yarra River, surrounded by the original landscaped gardens. The gardens are heritage listed and have undergone significant restoration, including to the antique bronze crane that is the centrepiece of the garden. The 32 suites are all individually decorated with different colour schemes, antique furnishings, spa or claw foot baths and a private verandah or patio. The property has two restaurants, including the one-hat Eleonore’s Restaurant, a library with open fireplace, cocktail bar, swimming pool and beauty room.

What to do
The Yarra Valley is recognised as one of Australia’s leading wine regions and there are almost 150 wineries in the area. Spend a day sampling the regional specialties like chardonnay, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon at cellar doors, and also visit one of the local farm gates offering home-grown produce or taste cheeses at the Yarra Valley Dairy. The Australian operation of the famous Moet & Chandon champagne house is not far from the property. The area is surrounded by the Yarra Ranges National Park, Toolangi State Forest and the Kinglake National Park, providing some great spots for bushwalking. Hot air ballooning is a great way to experience the park from the air. Or visit the Black Spur and see how some of the local towns, such as Marysville, are rebuilding after the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009.
