| Hayman resort will be forced to close from March 6 until July 31 in order to repair damage caused to the island by Tropical Cyclones Anthony and Yasi. All new and existing bookings for the period have been suspended. The two cyclones struck the island on January 30 and February 2 and initial assessments suggested the damage was minor and largely aesthetic in nature. However, specialist assessments have identified that repair works required are more extensive than first thought and necessitate the closure of the resort. Lloyd Donaldson, Managing Director of Hayman, said 'the works will encompass key guest and accommodation areas, activity facilities, essential infrastructure, landscaping and grounds throughout the island.' While the decision to close the resort was difficult, 'the works required and anticipated disruption to guests means we have no other choice,' Mr Donaldson said. The resort will be retaining all staff throughout the period and will reopen on August 1. Hayman is the third island resort in Queensland that has been forced to close following the cyclone, along with Dunk Island and Bedarra Island. |
