| In May William and Kate, the newly minted Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, followed in the footsteps of a number of celebrity newlyweds as they boarded a private jet and flew to the Seychelles for their honeymoon. Their final destination was the ultra-exclusive North Island, accessible only by private helicopter. There are only 11 villas on the island, and the royals took up residence in the finest, Villa North Island. This villa is tucked away from the rest in the Takamaka Forest on the northern end of Anste d’Este beach. The villa is designed around the natural incline and offers spectacular views from every angle. Will and Kate would have enjoyed 450 square metres of space with a private sun deck with pool and sala, butler service and a beach buggy to get them around the island. The villas operate on a ‘no menu’ concept as the chef designs daily menus around personal food preferences and fresh local produce. All inclusive rates for Villa North Island start from around EUR3,340 (about A$4,447) per person per night. The 115 tropical islands that make up the Seychelles are a popular choice for celebrity honeymoons. In 2000 Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston stayed on Fregate Island Private, booking out all 17 villas to ensure they had complete privacy. Paul McCartney and Heather Mills chose the same island in 2002, as did Liz Hurley and Arun Nayar in 2003. Unfortunately it seems that not even a dream honeymoon can ensure a happy marriage, as all three couples have since split. Salma Hayek and her French billionaire husband Francois-Henri Pinault honeymooned at North Island in 2009 and, thus far, have avoided the same fate. If you have your heart set on your own celeb-style getaway, the Seychelles is easily accessible from Australia. Emirates offers direct flights from Dubai and the national carrier, Air Seychelles, has direct flights from Singapore. Etihad recently announced the will be commencing flights from their base in Abu Dhabi at the beginning of November. Dubai, Singapore and Abu Dhabi can all be reached non-stop from Australian capital cities, meaning total travel time is only around 20 hours. Once there, choose between any number of five-star hotels, luxe villas or private islands that can be reached by helicopter, naturally. |
