Victoria’s State Government plans to use an A$1 million international architecture competition to restore Melbourne’s Flinders St station, as promised in their pre-election campaign. Features being considered include a boutique luxury hotel with grand views of Melbourne’s CBD, a shopping mall modelled on the current GPO complex and a new pedestrian walkway across St Kilda Rd. Another plan being considered is one that would see the grand ballroom transformed into a major function centre. However, the government has warned the development is not expected to begin for at least four years, when they might not be in office.
