Japan travel warnings

Date: March 18, 2011
The Australia government has urged Australians to leave or to avoid travel to Japan a week after the magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck Northern Japan. The region, including Tokyo and northern Honshu, has experienced strong aftershocks, drastic nuclear reactor damage, disrupted essential services and infrastructure damage.
The government also warned travellers should “exercise a high degree of caution” when visiting unaffected parts of Japan and to leave if their presence is not essential.
Kevin Rudd, Australia’s Foreign Minister, said there still remained good availability of outgoing flights for Australian and if necessary to government could provide more.
Many airlines are easing ticket conditions, and creating alternate flight paths in unaffected areas of Japan, to allow passengers to change travel plans.
