Germany’s Lufthansa has become the first airline to operate daily flights using biosynthetic kerosene. The Lufthansa Airbus A321 will undertake a six-month trial using biofuel for its daily flights between Hamburg and Frankfurt, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 1500 tonnes during the trial period. CEO of the Lufthansa Group, Christoph Franz, said that besides reducing CO2 emissions, the trial aims to examine the effects of biofuel on the lifespan of aircraft engines. The initiative is a part of a wider climate protection scheme adopted by Lufthansa, which also implements other measures such as ongoing fleet modernisation as a means of reducing overall CO2 emissions in the air transport sector.
