Qantas has welcomed a new Boeing 737-800 aircraft into service, naming it in honour of New Zealand mountaineer and explorer, Sir Edmund Hilary. The new aircraft will operate on the Wellington – Australia route with Grant Lilly, the Qantas Regional General Manager in New Zealand, naming Wellington as an important market for Qantas for both business and leisure travellers. Wellington International Airport, CEO, Steven Fitzgerald, is said to be “thrilled about the arrival of Qantas’ new 737-800” especially with more Wellingtonians choosing to fly direct from their airport in greater numbers. The aircraft aims to provide a new level of comfort for customers with the best of modern onboard technology, including on-demand Panasonic in-flight entertainment, and Marc Newson-designed seating. A further two new aircraft will join the fleet later this month, simultaneous with Qantas adding extra flights and seats from September 6 – October 24 to manage the extra visitors due to the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
