Otahuna Lodge has reopened this week for the first time since September 2010, when a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit Canterbury, New Zealand. For the past four months, this heritage building closed its doors in order to undergo an earthquake restoration programme. The restoration effort focused on roof repairs and seismic strengthening to prevent damage from any earthquakes in the future. The 115-year-old building features Victorian chimneys, which were also damaged in the earthquake. Managing Director Hall Cannon says that they were reconstructed to record “the effects of such a major event on the building’s celebrated history.” Otahuna Lodge is now taking bookings and operating as normal.
