| It is one of those mad, bad, city days when the traffic is gridlocked, the weather is wicked (…take an umbrella, don’t take an umbrella?), and the natives are definitely restless. Sydney is seething. I skid into a car space, just minutes before my spa appointment and rush to the hotel. The concierge is calm and smiling; my pace slackens to a mere jog. The lift doors slide open at the spa floor and the scent of fragrant oils greets me. I begin to walk, I begin to smile, I begin to unwind. A really good spa can make you relax almost before you realise it, however frantic your day has been up to that point. Like the hotel itself, The Day Spa at The Observatory Hotel is an elegant escape in the heart of a busy city. It is hard to believe this urban sanctuary is a short walk from the cars speeding over the Harbour Bridge and the crowded pavements of the CBD. From the star-spangled sky above its indoor swimming pool to the softly lit reception area, The Day Spa is all about luxury. The spa’s aim is to offer some of Sydney’s most exclusive spa experiences so you won’t find the kind of treatments that leave you feeling like a fruit salad. No, the ingredients offered here are far more refined and come from La Prairie and Payot, two of the world’s most prestigious skin care companies. Earlier this year the spa menu had a facelift, and the pampering on offer is now even more up-market. Forget the kiwi fruit; how about diamonds, pureed to give you the ultimate full body micro-dermabrasion, or caviar used in a firming facial, or my own personal favourite, chocolate, used for a body wrap which delivers the ultimate in scrumptious skin food. A therapist in stylish black, no clinical white coats here, leads me into a treatment room. I am booked in for the Payot Collagen Facial; an intensive hydrating treatment using pure collagen that I am assured will give my skin an ‘instant radiance’ and a ‘luminous glow’. It also has intensive moisturising benefits so my dehydration lines will appear smoother and my skin more supple. By the end of the treatment my skin does indeed feel rejuvenated but more importantly so does my spirit. Dr Nadia Payot, who created the exclusive skin care range in the 1920s once said: “I took care of my body until I understood that I also had to take care of my soul”. Making you feel good - inside and out - is what a good spa experience is all about. | |||||
