Tokyo’s Narita Airport, the largest international airport in Japan, reported a 60 percent drop in overseas arrivals since the earthquake struck two weeks ago. Between March 11th and 24th about 67,000 foreigners landed at the airport. In contrast, the number of foreigners leaving Japan through its gateways jumped from about 20,000 to 190,000. The exodus peaked at about 40,000 departures on March 13th; the same day Japanese authorities expanded the evacuation zone around the problematic Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant. Similar patterns have been seen at other Japanese airports such as Kansai International Airport in Osaka Prefecture.
