Review: The Mayfair, Adelaide

The Mayfair is one of Adelaide’s newest luxury hotel offerings, and was opened in 2015 within the refurbished 1930s heritage-listed Colonial Mutual Life (CML) building. With 170 well-appointed rooms, including 15 suites, the hotel is one of the most luxurious options in Adelaide for travellers exploring the city or staying over on the way to one of South Australia’s many celebrated wine regions.

Suite

Due to its heritage listing, rooms have limited scope for renovation, meaning that the suites at the Mayfair aren’t that dissimilar to the higher-tier room categories. There’s slightly more space in an Executive King Suite at 50 square metres, versus an Executive Luxury Room at 40 square metres. The main advantages of booking a room or suite in the Executive category (among other little additions) are a turndown service, a Nespresso coffee machine, and a daily newspaper.

Locale

The Mayfair is located in Adelaide’s CBD, across the road from the Rundle Mall and ideally placed for exploring the city’s quaint laneway bars. Enquire with the hotel concierge who will arrange transport to nearby hot spots and give recommendations of the best things to see and do in the city.

Look & feel

Designed by JPE Design Studio with interiors by Bates Smart, the hotel manages to feel modern while also retaining a sense of its art deco-era history, thanks to the building’s heritage-listed status. A highlight of my visit is the rooftop Hennessy Bar on level 13, which is stylishly appointed with a marble bar and Atelier Versace furnishings. The outdoor terrace has a vertical garden, underfloor heating and a glass canopy for wet weather. A live band performing during my visit made for a vibrant yet laid-back atmosphere.

Eat in

The Mayflower restaurant and bar is the hotel’s fine-dining establishment headed by chef Bethany Finn. I enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at the Mayflower where I ordered poached eggs, which were perfectly done, atop makeshift smashed avo on toast from the buffet.

Treat yourself

The hotel doesn’t have a spa, though if you’re in the mood for indulgence there are plenty of sweet treats in the Mayflower restaurant. Book a high tea with the signature French gateaux trolley, a truly mouth-watering array of cakes and pastries, teamed with a glass of champagne.

Special touches

Following in the footsteps of luxury hotel chains like The Westin and the Four Seasons, The Mayfair has custom-made beds that can be ordered by guests following their stay. The bed in my room was divine – I had the best sleep I’d had in months. A pillow menu is also available for guests to choose their preferred pillow style.

The Mayfair has an urban beehive on its rooftop, with the honey produced by its bees used in menu items throughout the hotel, including the Honey Trap cocktail served in Hennessy and in the selection of spreads at the Mayflower breakfast buffet.
