Design-focused Blackbird is located in the serene Byron Bay hinterland

Design-led boutique hotel Blackbird has opened in the picturesque Byron Bay hinterland as an adults-only nature retreat.

The property’s design was meticulously planned by owners Stella and James Hudson, who opted for an interior that includes Moroccan tiled bathrooms with naked copper fittings, lavish King size beds with Egyptian cotton linen on burnished concrete floors, unique reclaimed timber cabinetry and warm birch ply panelled walls.

The exterior design of the hotel’s pavilions and facilities is equally as impressive, with the property and its builder having been awarded the prestigious Master Builders Award in 2018.

A major drawcard of Blackbird is the magnesium mineral infinity pool. Framed by acres of green rainforest, it has spectacular views eastwards to Cape Byron, Mount Chincogan and the Pacific Ocean, making it the perfect place to enjoy a sunset drink.

“We wanted to create an exclusive and authentic space similar to the contemporary lifestyle we enjoyed in Sydney, and different from the more rustic alternatives in the region,” said Stella. “We thought there must be people like us that love nature and holiday experiences but don’t want to compromise on luxury and design.”

Upon arrival, guests receive complimentary Champagne and artisanal local produce, while James acts as a personal concierge by sourcing products, services and experiences, ensuring every guest’s stay is extraordinary and memorable.

Commenting on the ‘adults only’ element of Blackbird, James added, “We have kids of our own, however, we wanted to build somewhere that people can escape the ordinary and everyday of their lives. So, to manage the expectations of all guests we felt Blackbird should be exclusively adult.”

Guests wake up to a breathtaking hinterland view where the mountains meet the sea, with binoculars supplied for guests to take in even more detail of the landscape and birdlife.

Outside of the hotel, there are plenty of nature-focused activities for guests to participate in, including kayaking, mountain biking and hiking.

Blackbird is a stone’s throw from the charming town of Mullumbimby, while ever-bustling tourist and hippie hotspot Byron Bay and its beaches are just 35 minutes away.
