The Iconic Australian luxury property has reopened with a sustainable focus and enhanced amenities for a new generation of travellers
After a highly anticipated four-year wait, Southern Ocean Lodge by Baillie Lodges has reopened on Kangaroo Island’s South Coast. The original architect, Max Pritchard, and his team have led the recreation, preserving the property’s footprint and enhancing features based on guest preferences. The new iteration of the property is designed for a new generation of travellers to Kangaroo Island, with Southern Ocean Lodge prioritising environmental sustainability and carefully considering the context of a changing climate.
“With the benefit of hindsight and learning, we saw the chance to rebuild Southern Ocean Lodge as a special opportunity to return the property that seemed to touch so many guests over the years, and with some considered additions to take her to the next generation of travellers and a sustainable future,” said James Baillie, Founder of Baillie Lodges. “The occasion to open the recreated Southern Ocean Lodge on December 6, 2024, was both a real privilege and an emotional day for the whole team.”
The reconfiguration of Southern Ocean Lodge mirrors the original, featuring twenty-three suites now reoriented towards the southeast, providing uninterrupted views of the Southern Ocean and coastal wilderness. Each suite features private decks, an EcoSmart fireplace, and a sink-in bathtub. Additional features showcase an ultra-premium Ocean Pavilion, designed as a four-bedroom owner’s residence or two separate two-bedroom suites for families and friends. The Great Room terrace now includes a wet-edge pool, and the Southern Spa has expanded with three treatment rooms, a gym, sauna, and hot and cold plunge pools.
Southern Ocean Lodge has reset its standard around environmental sustainability, incorporating rainwater capture, solar power generation, smart building materials, and a remote-controlled sprinkler system. Additionally, revitalising the natural surroundings with 45,000 biodiverse native plants propagated onsite improves the property’s environmental ethos.

Rates at Southern Ocean Lodge start from AU$3,400 per couple per night and include dining, an open bar, five Kangaroo Island experiences, and airport transfers.
