Andy Warhol’s Pop Art Comes to The Peninsula New York

Andy Warhol Campbell's Soup Set of 10 1982-1987

Some of Andy Warhol’s most famous works will be on display in The Peninsula New York until October, in celebration of the hotel’s 30th anniversary

After opening its doors in 1988, The Peninsula New York is celebrating its 30th Anniversary with a curated art exhibition celebrating artists who were prominent in the 1980s. The exhibition, installed throughout the public spaces of the hotel, features a collection of original works of Andy Warhol, Francesco Clemente, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Barbara Kreuger.

In addition to the works, the exhibition features three iconic portraits of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat by famed photographer Michael Halsband, from when the two visited his studio on July 10, 1985. The images were taken to create a boxing-style poster to announce the collaboration of the two artists for a future exhibition. The three portraits are on display in the hotel’s Palm Court, while 10 original screen prints of Andy Warhol’s ‘Campbell’s Soup’ are on display in the upper lobby seating area, for visitors to view until the end of October.

Andy Warhol is viewed as the father of a movement that shaped the New York art world during the 1980s. The story of his famed Campbell’s Soup works not only established the beginning of the Pop Art movement in 1962, it became one of the most iconic, signature pieces of Andy Warhol’s career.

Warhol’s interpretation of Chairman Mao resulted in the creation of a portfolio that contains ten brightly colored, monumental portraits that now cover the walls of the hotel’s Gotham Lounge and are available to view until the end of August. These portraits illustrate Warhol’s fascination with the clash of imagery between Communist propaganda and Western fashion, in keeping with his portraits of other famed celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley.

Additional works by Andy Warhol available for viewing through October at The Peninsula New York include ‘Sausage Tree’ (1986), ‘Toy Painting Robot’ (1981) and ‘Diamond Dusk Candy Box’ (1981), all of which are on view in the upper lobby.

Other works by famous artists Keith Haring, Francesco Clemente, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Barbara Kruger are also on display throughout the hotel until the end of October.

Crystal River Cruises Welcomes Fifth Ship to its Fleet

Crystal Ravel

The cruise company marked the new addition to its fleet with a christening of the fifth vessel in Budapest

Less than two years after Crystal launched its first river ship, Crystal Mozart, marking the company’s entrance into the Europe’s river cruising industry, Crystal River Cruises has welcomed its fifth ship and newest addition to the fleet.

Crystal Ravel was ‘christened’ in a ceremony in Budapest, Hungary on 13th July during the ship’s overnight stay in Budapest on its weeklong “Danube Serenade” voyage, with guests aboard the sailing invited to participate in the festivities and travellers from around the world watching via the Facebook Live broadcast on Crystal’s Facebook page.

Crystal’s President and CEO Tom Wolber was in attendance to mark the occasion. “Today is a proud day for the entire Crystal family. In just over two years, we introduced five ships, which is a tremendous accomplishment of growth for this expansion of the Crystal brand. But what makes us most proud is that with each new ship and new experience, Crystal’s commitment to superb quality and exceptional luxury and service has remained unwavering,” Wolber said.

Crystal River Cruises now comprises Crystal Ravel and her identical sister ships: Crystal Bach, Crystal Mahler and Crystal Debussy; as well as Crystal Mozart, which launched the brand in July 2016 and is twice the width of any other river cruise ship, making it Europe’s most spacious river cruise vessel.

Crystal Ravel is currently sailing itineraries of six to 14 days between Vienna and Basel; and in 2019 she will be the only river ship to sail seven-night Danube cruises round-trip from Vienna to ports in Austria, Hungary and Slovakia.

Crystal’s new river vessels are all-suite, all-butler ships with every category of accommodation positioned above the water line.  All suites feature Panoramic Balcony-Windows and walk-in closets and dual vanity in the bathrooms are featured in most categories.  All of Crystal’s river ships feature acclaimed butler service in every room category, king-sized beds, ETRO amenities, robes and slippers, and wall-mounted flat-screen HD TVs. Additional enticing features include farm-to-table cuisine in multiple, open-seating eateries: the elegant Waterside Restaurant, namesake Bistro cafés and the exclusive Vintage Room; and the Palm Court for entertainment, enrichment presentations and sweeping views of the countryside.

&Beyond Bateleur Camp Reopens Following Rebuild

andBeyond Bateleur Kenya
andBeyond Bateleur Kenya

The popular safari lodge has a refreshed look, twenty years after it first opened in Kenya

Tucked away at the foot of the scenic Oloololo Escarpment at the rim of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya’s iconic Masai Mara Reserve, &Beyond Bateleur Camp has recently reopened following a complete rebuild. Twenty years after its first opening, this much loved classic in &Beyond’s portfolio of lodges has received a brand new look incorporating fresh ideas inspired by guest feedback and changing trends in hospitality.

The camp’s original designers, Fox Browne Creative, were charged with creating the lodge’s brand new look. To create a sense of continuity, they refreshed and upcycled a number of the camp’s original artefacts, antiques and furniture pieces, while high quality local artisans and suppliers were used wherever possible to maintain a sense of authenticity. The result is a refreshed accommodation that manages to maintains its much-loved classical and romantic safari feel.

The new design retains the vintage silver, soft worn leather, antique trunks and crystal decanters of the old camp, while incorporating new touches such as old world maps and elegant dark brass fitting that contrast with white marble surfaces. Usable floor space in the elegant guest tents has nearly doubled and the interiors appear more spacious through the use of a lighter colour palette and natural light. Ensuite bathrooms are flanked by private stone courtyards with spacious bathtubs, as well as indoor and al fresco showers. Sunken daybeds on the private verandas encourage idle afternoons without spoiling the breath-taking Mara views from everywhere inside the tent.

Early morning wake-up calls to enjoy the Mara’s diverse game viewing are accompanied by freshly brewed tea or coffee delivered through the conveniently placed butler hatches, while fences have been repositioned so that wildlife can come closer to the camp.

In addition to two new swimming pools with generous decks and unbeatable views, the camp also boasts a spa that provides a selection of treatment and massage options for single guests and couples looking to indulge in a shared experience. A well-equipped fitness centre with floor to ceiling roll-back glass walls looks out onto the Mara so guests feel as though they are working out in the midst of the game-filled plains, while the camp’s brand new Safari Shop offers some of the region’s best known designer and luxury products.

Coffee lovers will be thrilled with the addition of a bar that serves the best of Kenyan coffee by day and speciality safari drink gin cocktails by night, and after cocktails, guests can enjoy a multitude of new dining venues, from the pool deck to in-room or veranda dining. In keeping with the remainder of &Beyond’s East Africa circuit, &Beyond Bateleur Camp now has a family unit that consists of two guest tents with a shared sitting area.

Situated in the midst of the reserve’s astounding year-round concentration of animals, including the Great Wildebeest Migration, guests can enjoy an unsurpassed wildlife experience in terms of both the density and variety of species. On the plains of the Mara triangle, it’s only a short drive from important access points, with 2000 acres ideal for night drives, game walks and outside dining.
