South Australia will have a new luxury offering for local and international visitors with Sequoia when it officially opens in the Adelaide Hills in September 2020.

Once open, the $15-million luxury lodge will offer guests a six-star experience and be the first of its kind on mainland Australia. Overlooking the patchwork Piccadilly Valley, Sequoia is South Australian owned and operated by David Horbelt and his business partner Malcolm Bean.

Named after the three giant Californian Redwood trees planted by the original owner Arthur Hardy, Sequoia will feature 14 contemporary guest suites with access to a private club lounge, gardens, sundeck and natural spring-fed hot pools.

Overseen by Horbelt with input from local architects and designers, every room in the 75 square metre open-plan suites will display 180 views. The sunken lounge room will feature a Basket Range stone-clad gas fireplace while guests can sleep under the sky on a king-sized bed.

The 30 acre Mount Lofty estate is perched on the valley rim. Separate from the original house, the private retreat will have its own guest relations team and secure entrance.

Sequoia guests will have access to all of the property’s amenities including personalised service at the three-hatted Hardy’s Verandah Restaurant, Arthur Waterhouse Lounge and Stables Day Spa.

Guests can also choose from a catalogue of experiences that celebrate South Australian stories. Not available to the general public, these private behind-the-scenes tours with local winemakers take guests up-close and personal with native icons or local identities and brands.

Conveniently located just 15 minutes from Adelaide CBD and 30 minutes from the airport, Mount Lofty House offers a short escape in the rolling hills of the Adelaide Hills region that is known for its local wine and produce.

Tasting Australia Event at Sequoia at Mount Lofty House

Mount Lofty House will give an exclusive sneak preview of the lodge, six months ahead of its official opening, with an experience featuring some of the best food, wine and music from South Australia. The overnight Tasting Australia adventure begins with a limousine transfer to the estate and Sequoia Sparkling beneath the giant tree that shares its name.

From here guests can choose to relax during a 30-minute spa treatment or discover the nuances of Adelaide Hills gin during a guided tasting. Evening canapés will be served as the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra performs live before guests connect with representatives from flagship South Australian brands RM Williams and Jurlique.

On Tuesday 31 March guests will experience a menu crafted by Hardy’s Verandah’s own awarded chef, Jin Choi and internationally celebrated ‘paddock to plate’ chef, Jared Ingersoll, while the menu on Wednesday 1 April sees a visionary gastronomical collaboration between Duncan Welgemoed (Africola) and Paul Bentley (Magno Brasserie) derived from an infusion of native Australian ingredients with unique Mexican preparation techniques.

Both menus will be matched with wines by South Australian producer, Penfolds. A bottle of Bin 28 Shiraz per couple with a Kangaroo Karmine leather wine bag will be available for guests to take home. Before guests retire, they can gather around a bonfire for after-dinner marshmallows, stories and stargazing before turning in to Sequoia for the night.

Kempinski Hotel Bahia in Marbella–Estepona, Spain, has partnered with celebrity designer Debbie Wingham to reveal a Christmas Tree that’s worth a total of £11.9 million.

Fashioned from high-value stones, the tree is peppered with pink, red, white and black diamonds that were ethically sourced, edible treats and traditional decorations. The decorations include 3 carat pink diamonds, 4 carat sapphire, oval red diamonds, black and white diamonds and a mixture of remastered, up-cycled jewellery from the likes of Bvlgari, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Chanel.

Inspired by peacock feathers and the modernist art-deco era, the tree features unique martini glasses, feathers, perfume bottles and 3D printed chocolate peacocks. Monocle’s inaugural Small Cities Index ranks the top 25 best places in the world to relocate to

Lausanne has taken out the number one spot in Monocle’s inaugural Small Cities Index. The ranking was published on Thursday 28 November 2019 in the magazine’s special annual title ‘The Forecast’, which looks at the places and trends that will shape the coming year. It is the first time the publication has focused on smaller hubs, with populations of up to 200,000.

Lausanne – population 140,000 – won as a result of its global outlook, multilingual population (40 per cent of residents are not nationals), good schools, public transport (it’s the smallest city with a metro in the world), great natural setting and its hosting of key employers, including the International Olympic Committee. The Swiss city of Basel also made the list, coming in at number 14.

Increasingly popular among international tourists, Tasmanian capital Hobart also made the top four.

According to Monocle, the new ranking responds to an evolving global society where technology has freed a generation to run their businesses and lives from second- and third-tier cities. People are also increasingly seeking the quality of life available in compact cities; many people feel priced out of capitals and small cities have invested in culture, architecture and education to become key centres for manufacturing, technology and learning.

“Having established a strong franchise with the annual Monocle quality-of-life ranking, we felt that it was time to measure liveability in smaller-scale cities that were hard to put in the same league as cities like Tokyo or Vancouver,” says Monocle Editor-in-Chief, Tyler Brûlé.

“We kept noticing that our readers were moving to the likes of Porto and Boulder and creating busy, better lives for themselves. This survey shows why people are voting with their feet and ambitions,” added Monocle Editor, Andrew Tuck.

The ranking was compiled by Monocle’s correspondents, editors and researchers analysing elements such as the quality of public transport, rail and air connections, lively metabolism and progressive local government, among other metrics.

Music lovers, this one’s for you. 2020 marks The Year of Scotland, when the largest showcase of traditional Scottish music and heritage will take place throughout Australia.

Taking place over 12 months from December 31st 2019 until and including December 31st 2020, hundreds of performances of Scotland’s finest Traditional, Gaelic and Celtic musicians will take the stage. In just the first three months between January and March 2020 there will be 150 performances at over 70 festivals and venues in more than 60 towns and cities.

The year-long festival is backed by Creative Scotland, VisitScotland, The Scottish Government and The Glenturret whisky, with the working partnership’s goal to create demand for continued Scottish performances beyond 2020, and encourage more Australians to visit Scotland.

The Year of Scotland in Australia is a fantastic way for our friends here to sample Scotland’s vibrant arts, music and cultural scene and maybe provide that spark of inspiration for those yet to visit and experience it for themselves.

This program of events will showcase some of the best of Scottish talent and is an ideal way to celebrate that strong and long-standing bond.”

With many more to be announced in the New Year, the program already features the world-renowned Capercaillie, alongside Elephant Sessions and multi-award winning Breabach, as well as Moishe’s BagelRuraThe LanganbandThe Jellymans Daughter, and rising stars such as Brìghde ChaimbeulFara, and Siobhan Miller.

Many of the acts have strong roots in their cultural heritage whilst also drawing upon other musical genres such as rock, jazz, classical and pop.  This diversity in music will showcase the Scotland’s living tradition–contemporary, confident and hugely appealing to audiences at home and abroad. 

From The Glenturret Burns Night Supper on January 25, during which Scottish tradition will meet Australian Indigenous culture at Sydney’s Opera House, and a 27-date Scottish Towns and Grand Houses circuit across the country in conjunction with the National Trust, through to the Brigadoon Highland Games, a local version of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Woodford Folk Festival Hogmanay on 31 December, The Year of Scotland in Australia will bring a variety of Scottish culture and heritage to Australian audiences.  The Year also aims to highlight the ongoing work of Australian-based organisations who maintain Scottish tradition and culture through annual presentation of their own Burns Nights, Games, Ceilidhs, Clan Gatherings and festivals.

Take a first look inside the new 80th floor at The Empire State Building Observatory after a recently completed four-year, $165 Million redevelopment project

The Empire State Building Observatory (ESBO) atop ‘The World’s Most Famous Building’ in New York City has opened its sky-high 80th floor after an extensive $165 million-dollar redevelopment. 

New on the 80th floor is an exclusive, interactive partnership with NYC & Company, the official marketing, tourism and partnership bureau for New York City, with five interactive video blades that allow visitors to design itineraries for their visit using a massive inventory of destinations in all five boroughs. The itineraries automatically download to a visitor’s phone with the use of a QR Code reader or can be sent via e-mail. This was designed in response to research that showed ESBO is many visitors first destination.

Interactive, augmented reality scenes from New York City, housed inside classic binoculars, bring visitors directly to the sights and sounds of popular destinations. Other exhibits include videos of Empire State Building’s light shows with interviews with the lighting designer Marc Brickman, user generated content and famous British memory artist Steven Wiltshire’s monumental skyline of New York City.

80th Floor exhibits Include:

  • NYC: Above and Beyond: This exhibit, created in partnership with NYC & Company, encourages visitors to create a personalised trip itinerary from the top of the Empire State Building – often their first stop in New York City. After answering questions about their interests and the length of their stay, they can assemble a personalised list of recommendations for attractions and sites throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Guests can then obtain their customised itinerary via e-mail or scanned by QR code directly to the visitors’ handheld devices for future reference.
  • Artistry in Light: Ever wonder how the Empire State Building’s music-to-light shows are created? The Artistry in Light exhibit features a short film narrated by world-renowned lighting designer Marc Brickman. The film features highlights from his designs, such as the first ever music-to-light show with Alicia Keys in 2012, and a holiday light show synced to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You.”
  • Stephen Wiltshire’s Drawing: In 2017, famed British artist Stephen Wiltshire took a 45-minute helicopter ride above Manhattan. He then drew an incredibly detailed landscape drawing of New York City, while in residence on the 80th floor of the Empire State Building, completely from memory. A three-minute film documents his process, from the 45-minute helicopter ride to the four days in which he created the original piece of art.
  • Scenes of NYC: Through Empire State Building’s classic viewfinders, visitors can check out panoramic views of nine different famed New York locations from the 80th floor. From Times Square to Coney Island, visitors get an up-close look (and even a glance inside) at places they can spot from the building’s 86th and 102nd floor observation decks.
  • Showtime Pictures: Excited to see the photos taken in front of the green screen on the 2nd floor? The pictures are captured from 25 different angles utilising 25 different HD cameras to create an immersive experience to tell a visual narrative. The new location for pick up has been redesigned with facial recognition technology, to speed the retrieval and purchase process through self-serviced kiosks.
  • Share Your Experience: As visitors enter the exit queue, they are encouraged to share their pictures on their social media platforms by four screens that create mosaic shadows of each visitor with images shared by other guests that use the hashtag #empirestatebuilding.

Tickets to the 86th floor Observatory start at $38 USD with tickets to the 102nd floor Observatory available for an additional $20 USD. Tickets are available online or in real time on-site at kiosks located on the second and 86th floor.
