Dusit Thani Bangkok: A rare sense of calm in the heart of the city

Overlooking Lumpini Park, the reimagined Dusit Thani Bangkok trades the city’s usual intensity for space, light and a quieter expression of luxury

The name Dusit Thani is synonymous with high-end hotels, with a pedigree stretching back to 1949 when celebrated Thai hospitality entrepreneur, Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui, launched the Princess Hotel on Charoenkrung Road.

In 1970, the Dusit Thani, named after the Thai word for ‘heavenly abode’, raised the bar when it opened the newbuild high-rise hotel on busy Silom Road, becoming not just Bangkok’s tallest hotel, but its tallest building, too. It was a tumultuous time in Southeast Asia, and the Dusit Thani reflected a modernised Thailand enjoying substantial economic growth, whilst retaining strong Thai design elements and cultural references.

During the following decades, Dusit Thani grew beyond its original single property offering, into a sophisticated multinational enterprise that respected Thai hospitality traditions alongside modern Western architectural design and construction techniques.

With impeccable timing, the original hotel closed in January 2019 to make way for an entirely new chapter in the Dusit Thani story. As the city and much of the world shut down under COVID, construction of a brand new ‘clean slate’ hotel and the accompanying Dusit Central Park multi-use precinct continued, reopening to much fanfare in September 2024.

Design that resists excess

The new hotel was a unique architectural concept insofar as it formed a special entity, Dragon Company Limited, an amalgam of two firms – Architects 49 International Limited and OMA Asia (Hong Kong) Limited – to conduct the mammoth task of ensuring the new property paid homage to the unique style of its predecessor.

All interiors were crafted by internationally acclaimed Asian interior design firm, André Fu Studio, whose brief was to blend the original hotel’s rich heritage with contemporary Thai aesthetics, utilising warm colour tones and subtle traditional motifs for a modern interpretation of classic Thai artistry and craftsmanship.

“The original Dusit Thani Bangkok had a soul all of its own, and our goal was to translate that spirit into a contemporary space equipped for the future,” said Ms Natapa Sriyuksiri, Managing Director – Dusit Estate, and Group Creative Strategy before the rebuild. “We started by reinterpreting the original hotel’s unique design elements through a modern lens. This involved studying the hotel’s distinctive interiors and architecture to identify patterns we could modernise or reference in new creations.”

This included the reuse of signature pieces, such as the two massive ornate columns incorporated into the new foyer design, as well as the hand-carved wooden ceiling from the Benjarong restaurant.

This decision followed Dusit International’s partnership with Silpakorn University, whose preservation experts carefully identified key items of historical or artistic value in the original structure for reuse in the new build.

Dining across cultures and decades

When I visit the hotel in November 2025, it has been trading for a little more than a year and has already made it onto The World’s 100 Best Hotels 2025 list and earned a Michelin Key, the group’s third property to garner the prestigious recognition.

We dine at the Pavilion for lunch and breakfast most mornings. Unusual Thai recipes such as spicy southern yellow curry, toddy palm, coral red grouper, and Pavilion signature braised charolaise beef shank and tendon with shiitake mushroom are all resurrected from past times by Chef Rosarin Sriprathum, as well as Cantonese specialities and regular Western dishes.

Beyond the Pavilion, the hotel hosts Cannubi by Umberto Bombana for Italian fine dining, as well as Dusit Gourmet, a casual but classy cafe-style venue adjoining the main mall complex, offset by the hotel’s impressive cascading water feature.

Unlike other Bangkok city hotels, shoe-horned into the busy central district, there are no ‘bad’ rooms. This also applies to the hotel’s Spire Rooftop Bar, and the swimming pool on the 7th floor.

Where the hotel comes alive

The hotel’s position opposite Lumpini Park affords every room spectacular, unimpeded views of the park and the distant skyline. Unlike other Bangkok city hotels, shoe-horned into the busy central district, there are no ‘bad’ rooms. This also applies to the hotel’s Spire Rooftop Bar, and the swimming pool on the 7th floor.

Standout experiences at the hotel include the exceptional spa treatments at Devarana Wellness and the fun cocktail activation at the retro 1970 Bar on the 38th floor. Coupled with exceptional Thai hospitality from the international staff, this amounts to a most memorable hotel stay – even for someone immersed in hospitality culture. The Dusit Thani Bangkok creates a soothing environment for anyone looking for a luxury hotel stay that doesn’t rely on gimmickry or gaudy accoutrements but instead leans into classic hospitality principles, restrained decor and superb service.
