Five reasons to stay at The Residence Mauritius

For an island that is just over 2,000 square kilometres, Mauritius has more than its fair share of luxury hotels. Gary Allen and his family found The Residence to be one of the best.

No. 1: The beach

The resort sits on a kilometre of pristine white sand at Belle Mare, on the east of the island. It’s regarded as one of the best beaches on the island and, while it can get busy on weekends, if you’re staying during the week you’ll find it blissfully quiet. The resort offers plenty of watersports for all levels of experience, so get out on a jet ski, paddleboard, hobie cat, kayak or windsurfer, before exploring the underwater world snorkelling, diving or walking on the seabed. Better yet, go for an early morning horse ride on the beach and be sure to take the horse for a swim. A great experience.

No. 2: The style

Walking into The Residence feels like stepping back to colonial Mauritius. A large vaulted open air lobby welcomes you with views out to the pool and the magnificent ocean beyond. Inspired by plantation houses of the 1920s, the resort is all white shutters, breezy walkways, honey-coloured wood and the exotic scent of ylang ylang in the air. For the full experience, stay in one of the top suites and sleep in a plush four-poster bed.

No. 3: The spa

With a “zen” concept, you can’t help but relax in The Residence’s cool, calm spa, The Sanctuary. Therapists use a mix of Asian techniques including reiki, Thai massage and yogic breathing. There are nine treatment rooms, but make sure you choose the one set in the tropical gardens and overlooking the lagoon. There’s also a beauty salon using French Carita products, offering great options for repairing sun stressed hair and skin.

No. 4: The butlers

Don’t want to unpack your suitcase? You don’t have to. Each room and suite at The Residence has butler service, so every need is catered to. Your butler can set up a private dinner on your terrace or run you a petal-strewn bath, and it’s always done with a smile.

No. 5: The kids

You’ll never hear the cry of “I’m bored” when staying here. The Planters Kids Club is right on the beach and entertains three to 12 year olds every day with treasure hunts, snorkelling lessons, sports tournaments, hikes, picnics, glass bottom boat tours and pony rides. During school holidays, a new Rugbytots programme teaches two to seven year olds basic rugby skills and games are held each week for the whole family to play. Evening entertainment includes movies, fashion shows and plays. Buffet lunch and dinner are served outside under the tropical canopy and kids can get involved and cook their own pizzas in mini ovens.
