From fairy gardens and animal themes to a step into Hong Kong’s past, the children’s rooms at Island Shangri-La are sure to pique imaginations

The 45th floor of the Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong has been reimagined for guests looking to spend quality time with their children. The 21 themed rooms and suites are designed with young visitors in mind and are nothing short of spectacular. ‘The Hangout’ serves as a living-dining-playroom while ‘The Pantry’ provides a wide range of children-related appliances to ease parents’ travels.

The adventure begins the moment guests step off of the 45th floor lift and into the lobby that has been redesigned to look like a Hong Kong train station with a moving model train. A new experience awaits guests along each corridor with garden or marine themes. Room and suite doors are stencilled with local forest and marine animals, making it easier for younger guests to find their peak or harbour view getaway.

Child-friendly design choices in the rooms and suites include toddler-safe beds fitted with a slide, interactive toys and furnishings and decorations that nod to Hong Kong’s unique culture and landscape. A parents’ area is also available as is extra luggage space, larger interconnected suites and in-room babysitting service.

One-bed Guestrooms

One-bed guestrooms celebrate Hong Kong’s natural landscape through Fisherman’s Cove or Garden Lodge themes. Custom design beds for children include bedside panels that drop to create an undisturbed darkened space for sleeping while parents enjoy the evening nearby.

The Fisherman’s Cove guestroom is inspired by Hong Kong’s maritime heritage and contains a single deck bed inspired by those on a traditional junk plus a rope walkway leading to an observation hut. Kerosene-style lanterns, a sampan-shaped rocking chair and a boat’s wheel that turns, as well as anchors, buoys and starfish cushions, add an authentic touch.

The Peak-facing Garden Lodge guestroom has a tiered climbing deck leading up to a viewing platform and a log cabin-inspired bed. The walls are painted like wildflower gardens, cushions are leaf-shaped and wildlife patterns throughout are intended to evoke the great outdoors.

Two-bedroom Family Suites

These suites include a king-size bed, separate bathrooms and an extra Murphy fold-away bed in the children’s room. Six different themes are available in this suite size with children’s rooms that feature a slide, a personalised nameplate, interactive lights and sounds, a treasure trove of toys and special outfits for dress up. Hidden throughout the room are secret animals and motifs hand-painted by a group of local artists that are only visible under the light of a special UV torch. Parents’ rooms reflect the nature theme with a more delicate flare and double as a family room and include a pantry.

A bunk bed modelled after the iconic green trams is a highlight of the Hong Kong Wonders suite. The bed incorporates a slide on the upper deck and interactive panels with buttons and pedals allow children to control sounds and lights. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong mural – created by local artist Don Mark – portrays the city’s iconic landmarks and rural landscapes.

In the Safari Adventure suite children can pretend they are on a real safari campsite with a canvas-tented bunk bed and a suspension bridge leading to a slide. A treasure chest filled with toys including one that plays animal sounds and the African terrain mural further enhance children’s imaginations.

The Underwater Treasure suite features a submarine bunk bed that can be entered through a hatch to find the driving panels that contain buttons to control alarms and alerts. A treasure chest contains one of the most precious finds for children – toys – while an aquascape inspires observation of underwater wonders. Coral reefs and sea creatures adorn the wall mural.

Three-bedroom Family Suites

Launching in April 2024, each of the Three-bedroom Family Suites includes a king bed for parents, a themed children’s room with a slide and a separate living room. The independent kitchen is equipped with cooking facilities, a hydro tap and child-friendly utensils.

The Airship Voyage suite is based on a long past Hong Kong and offers children the controls to the propeller, turbine and other mechanics on their very own airship. A weather projection transports young explorers to various climates. The treasure chest includes nostalgic items such as dim sum, milk tea playsets and an abacus while the mural illustrates Hong Kong’s history, heritage, buildings and cultural icons.

The mystical world of the Fairy Garden suite brings a pink pumpkin carriage bunk bed into the children’s room decorated with a mural landscape featuring wild plants, butterflies, flowers, unicorns and toadstools. Tea parties can be held at a table and chairs complete with dress up corners and a tea set to ensure the most elegant of children’s high tea. The ceiling plays host to a projection that is accompanied by sound.

Exclusive family floor: The Hangout and The Pantry

The trifecta of a grab and go station, adjacent workshop room and sitting room complete The Hangout, which is exclusive to family floor guests. The grab and go station hosts food counters for both children and adults that serve healthy refreshments with views of Victoria Peak. In the workshop room, children have access to activities, board games, bookshelves with a variety of books in different languages and a dedicated space for creative activities. Plus there is a bathroom that includes a diaper changing table. The sitting room decorated with botanical wallpaper and armchairs provides space to relax with friends or family, play board games or read.

Centrally located on the 45th floor is The Pantry, which offers a communal space with home comforts such as a washing machine and tumble dryer, wash basin, microwave and other meal prep essentials. Additional children-related appliances include strollers and bottle warmers, which are provided with the intent of reducing the amount of necessities parents pack to get to Hong Kong.

Outdoor WATERPLAY area on 8th floor pool deck

The 8th floor pool deck now features a WATERPLAY area designed for families. Designed to ensure safety for children up to the age of six, the area includes a toddler paddling pool, splash park with a water tunnel, water jets, LED lights, flower sculptures and an interactive whack-a-mole wall. Guests on Island Shangri-La’s 45th floor will receive a poll bag with amenities. The pool deck also houses pool toys and swimming diapers.
