Inside the new-look Likuliku Lagoon Resort on Fiji’s Malolo Island

Following a thoughtful three-month revitalisation, Fiji’s Likuliku Lagoon Resort emerges with quiet confidence. From its enhanced ocean-to-table dining concept to a new hands-on conservation hub and redesigned beachfront bures, this Malolo Island retreat deepens its commitment to grounded luxury, cultural integrity, and immersive island living

Approach Fiji’s Likuliku Lagoon by water and you’ll see what looks like an ancient village. Traditional bures sit above turquoise water and peek through the lush shoreline, while a winding boardwalk connects you to the expansive Fijian canoe house perched on the shore. Legend says this island was born of lava and sand, an untouched paradise that its first visitors named Likuliku – meaning “calm waters” – to honour its beauty and tranquility.

This is Likuliku Lagoon Resort, a wilderness island retreat that is a haven of subtle luxury. Set in a natural ocean lagoon, the resort is surrounded by a protected marine sanctuary, and is the first and only resort in Fiji with authentic over-water bures. Wholly owned by a local Fijian tourism family – Ahura Resorts – Likuliku is designed with integrity to Fijian cultural values and traditional designs and architecture.

After three months of revitalisations, Likuliku Lagoon Resort is once again open for guests, revealing an evolution of its renowned hospitality that underscores the property’s continued commitment to relaxed luxury, sustainable tourism, and world-class experiences. Featuring an innovative new dining concept, an interactive conservation hub, and elevated luxury accommodations, Likuliku is somehow more beautiful than ever, a siren of Malolo Island’s sparkling seas.

Discover a new culinary concept and accommodation upgrades

One of the flagship updates is Saluwaki, a new dining experience showcasing Fijian-inspired Asian tapas. Named for the Fijian word for a collection of indigenous herbs and spices, the restaurant features locally sourced ingredients, including some from the Resort’s own gardens and surrounding waters. This fresh, seasonal produce is transformed into a menu of small-plate culinary delights, with dishes like ember-roasted Walu and handmade squid ink noodles. With an open kitchen and an intimate setting of only 28 guests, Saluwaki is a “once during a stay” highlight dining event, providing an elevated, innovative take on inclusive dining.

The revitilisation has also extended to the bures, of which each one has been refreshed to offer even more luxury and serenity. 11 Beachfront Bures have been upgraded to include private plunge pools, while fresh paint, new wallpaper, new bathroom tapware and beautifully re-done hardwood floors have also been enhanced in all accommodation types. These join Smart TVs with sound bars and espresso coffee machines that were introduced as standard in 2024. The Over-Water Bures have also received extra luxe bathroom amenities for the bathing pavilion.

A new sustainability hub takes guests above the sea, below the sea, and into the community

Na Vanua Conservation Hub

As stewards of the protected waters of Malolo Island and the nearby private island of Muciu (also known as Honeymoon Island, this is for the exclusive use of resort guests), Likuliku Lagoon Resort has unveiled the Na Vanua Conservation Hub. Launched in collaboration with the award-winning Ahura Resorts Conservation Foundation – a registered charitable trust, the Na Vanua Conservation Hub offers guests a unique, hands-on opportunity to engage with and support local ecosystems and Fijian culture.

The hub embodies the Foundation’s three key pillars: Above the Sea, Below the Sea, and Community, highlighting the importance of sustainability and cultural preservation. It also is deeply entwined with the concept of “Na Vauna”, or “the land”, which reflects the deep connection between the land, people, and nature, and celebrates the resort’s partnership with its traditional landowners to preserve the local ecosystem.

As guests enter the hub, they’ll be greeted by an immersive and interactive space dominated by the architectural wonder of the giant floor-to-ceiling operable walls – etched with 14 symbols, each representing a vital piece of the land, sea, and culture that define the spirit of Likuliku. With displays of field projects and opportunities to engage with the Foundation Team, guests will be able to learn more about, and engage with, conservation efforts like: reforestation, mangrove restoration, the critically-endangered Fiji Crested Iguana conservation program, coral planting, herb garden tours, and back-of-house waste and recycle tours. There are also opportunities for community engagement with the Foundation’s key support project – the local village kindergarten, as well as capacity and legacy building with the island’s indigenous resource owners and more.

A Likuliku evolution

As well as these new updates, programs, and offerings, Likuliku Lagoon Resort’s reopening has also revealed a new outdoor terrace deck and upgraded interiors for signature restaurant Fijiana; a complete makeover for Dua Tale Bar; a new sound system for all restaurants and bars with curated music playlists by Music Concierge; upgrades to the main pool; refurbished public-area bathrooms; and additional access points for high-speed WiFi.

The resort has also completed its roofing project, with new synthetic thatching on the roofs of the Beachfront and Deluxe Beachfront Bures, further enhancing Likuliku’s sustainability efforts and bringing the entire resort to 100% coverage.

They are also set to unveil their own Water Bottling and Production Plant, where still and sparkling water will be produced for both Likuliku and sister resort Malolo Island Resort, and presented in recycled branded glass bottles made in the Resorts’ own recycling plant. This bottled water will be supplied complimentary daily in all rooms.

After completing these enhancements over the past 3 months, Likuliku Lagoon Resort once again proudly welcomes guests to its shores, offering a unique escape that lives in symbiosis with land, sea, and community. While “barefoot luxury” remains at the core of the Likuliku offering, their extensive upgrades take the resorts ethos a step further, with every bure, every dinner, and every interaction with the grounds, giving guests an opportunity to enrich not only mind, body, and soul, but the country and communities who host them.

With its unrivaled blend of wilderness luxury, sustainability, and cultural richness, Likuliku Lagoon Resort is ready to offer an unforgettable experience that sets the standard for quintessential Fijian hospitality and excellence.
