About the hotel
Built in 1912, Pier One was a cargo wharf and passenger terminal until 1977. The hotel opened in 1999 and was renovated in 2012. Set in the heart of The Rocks overlooking Walsh Bay, it has 189 rooms including seven newly renovated suites (four with balconies). The prevailing theme is nautical, blending original timber beams and ironwork with a chic modern design. It has a small boutique feel.
Unique features
Pier One has over-the-water rooms with amazing views of Luna Park, the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. It is pet-friendly (cleaning fee applies). The function/conference venue features jaw-dropping floor-to-ceiling views of Sydney Harbour.
Dining
The Gantry Restaurant & Bar overlooks Walsh Bay and is enveloped by the sunset, which transforms it into a glowing amber ball. Admiring the large zinc-clad bar, we enjoyed a pre-dinner cocktail while listening to the DJ. Our shared plate of Mirrool Creek 24-hour roasted lamb shoulder with caramelised vegetables and couscous was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The breakfast was also very good with a selection of healthy options such as chia seed pudding, fresh berries, homemade yoghurt in glass pots and probiotic drinks. There were also gluten-free options. You can sit outside on the pier if weather permits.
Spa
Experience the luxury of a spa without leaving your room. The hotel’s Stay-In spa menu features massage, exfoliating scrub treatments, facials, manicures, pedicures and more, all without leaving your suite.
Highlights
Champagne when checking in was a nice surprise. Other highlights were yoga on the pier under the Harbour Bridge, watching the sun set from our 40-square-metre balcony overlooking Walsh Bay, and the beautiful Appelles Apothecary amenities.
Upgrade
We stayed in a Harbour View Balcony Suite overlooking Walsh Bay, but the Harbour View Balcony Suite at the north end of the hotel has the best views of the harbour.
Insider tip
Don’t forget to book ahead for yoga on the pier, which is free to hotel guests. If yoga is not your thing, take a morning walk around the botanical gardens before heading back for breakfast.
