Antarctic Skiing and Snowshoeing: Aurora Expeditions’ new Antarctica activities

Polar expedition specialists Aurora Expeditions has announced two new activities, which will be available on selected 2017/18 Antarctica itineraries.

An activity reserved exclusively for highly experienced skiers, the Aurora’s Antarctic Ski Tours will see guests descending virgin glacial slopes into some of the region’s most difficult to reach areas, many of which have never been explored before. The challenging descent is rewarded with exclusive access to untouched bays filled with floating icebergs and perhaps even local wildlife including penguins and whales.

As well as giving access to some of the continent’s most remote areas, the Ski Tours will include expert instruction on mountaineering skills including roped glacier travel, ice axe use, avalanche procedures and emergency shelter construction.

Those who are not experienced skiers can opt for snowshoeing, an alternative to hiking, which allows travellers to ascend snowy slopes and traverse powdery expanses. After a half an hour training session, snowshoes and ski poles will be provided and the group will embark on a three hour trek across the polar landscape.

The two new activities will be available on select In-depth South Georgia & Antarctica and Spirit of Antarctica expeditions departing 27 November 2017 and 16 December 2017, respectively. Expedition fares starts from US$8,900 (about A$11,715) per person, with ski touring starting from an additional US$900 (about A$1,184) per person and snowshoeing from an additional US$250 (about A$329) per person.
