It seems that the rest of the world is beginning to appreciate what we have always known; that Australian food and wine is among the best in the world. Tourism Australia found recently that international visitors ranked Australia second in the world as a gourmet destination, behind only the culinary powerhouse of France. Luxury Travel magazine has chosen some of the best epicurean experiences in Australia for you to explore.

Just west of Kakadu National Park on the Mary River floodplains, it’s fair to say Bamurru Plains is out bush. But that doesn’t mean you’re destined to boil a billy around the campfire. Making the most of its unique location, the food takes on a native tang with local produce meeting bush flavours like Manuka honey, lemon myrtle, mud crab and homemade damper. Meals are designed to fit around the schedule of safari activities planned for the day, starting with an airboat trip on the floodplains to capture the morning light (this is also the best time to spot wildlife) before stopping for tea and homemade bread among the bird sounds and fish life. When the sun sets take your seat around the camp table for a three-course meal in front of an open kitchen and watch the chef whip up dishes such as barramundi chowder and mud crab ravioli. Now that’s highbrow bush tucker.
