Embark on a nine day journey that harks back to the vintage safari days of Ernest Hemingway and Denys Finch Hatton. This was a time when pioneering adventurers moved through the endless plains of East Africa in search of the country’s extraordinary wildlife, accompanied by a score of liveried attendants who pitched camp in the most breathtaking locations and provided immaculate service. This modern-day adventure channels all the glamour of that bygone era with private camps set up exclusively for a small group.

Day 1

Arrive in Nairobi

Welcome to Nairobi, the birthplace of Safari. Arrive at your luxury boutique hotel in the serene Nairobi suburb of Karen. Use this leisurely afternoon to relax, adjust to the time difference and prepare for the incredible journey that lies ahead.

Day 2

Nairobi – Ol Pejeta Conservancy

The safari begins in earnest today as you journey north across the Equator towards Nanyuki and westwards to the 90,000 acre Ol Pejeta Conservancy where a classic Hemingway-style camp awaits. A mobile tented safari is the traditional way to enjoy the African wilderness. The camp has an exclusive site on a private concession with every home comfort accounted for. Each tent is fully furnished with comfortable beds, including an en suite bathroom with flush toilets and hot showers. After an alfresco lunch, enjoy the first evening game drive in search of predators on the hunt.

  • Lunch and Dinner

Day 3

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

With the Snowy Peaks of Mt.Kenya in the background make your way to East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to three of the world’s last remaining northern white rhinos and 113 critically endangered black rhinos. On twice daily game drives, naturalist guides share their expert knowledge while seeking close encounters with the rhino as well as elephant, wild dogs, lions, hyena, buffalo, cheetah and plains herbivores. Between game drives there is time to relax, take a guided walk or experience the inspiring conservation activities going on at the conservancy, which includes lion tracking or a visit to the anti-poaching dog unit.

Day 4

Ol Pejeta Conservancy – Lake Elmentaita

Today you head into the Rift Valley to Lake Elmentaita, a soda lake rich in birdlife. The new camp here is situated in Soysambu Conservancy, which was established in 1905 by Lord Delamere. A wildlife conservancy, Soysambu is an important wetland site with over 450 species of birds including the great white pelican and flamingo. Enjoy beautiful views of the lake from camp and the animals which graze its shores – zebra, gazelle, eland and families of warthog. Time to relax after lunch before a late afternoon game drive.

  • Stay at Soysambu Conservancy

Day 6

Lake Elemteita – Masai Mara National Reserve

A flight delivers you to Masai Mara National Reserve where you are welcomed by staff from the next camp site and taken on a game drive en route to camp. The Masai Mara’s 1,500 square kilometres of sprawling savannah along with the adjoining Serengeti National Park to the south, makes up the most diverse ecosystems on the continent. Every year the Masai Mara holds witness to the wildebeest migration, view the mass of plains game moving north from the Serengeti in search of fresh pasture. At the Mara River, animals mass together nervously on the banks before plunging in, their pursuit of food overcoming the fear of the crocodiles that lie in wait. This spectacle involves over a million wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, zebra as well as herds of topi and eland. Later this afternoon join a game drive in search of the herds and predators.

The next two days are spent in the world famous Masai Mara with morning and afternoon game viewing activities. You may like to consider an early morning hot air balloon flight  (for an additional fee) which allows you to float gently over the plains, giving a bird’s eye view of the game below as the sun creeps slowly over the horizon. After around one hour the balloon lands as breakfast is already being prepared and, of course, enjoy a glass or two of bubbly to toast your flight.

  • Stay at Masai Mara Private Tented Camp (Safari Tent)
  • Breakfast, Dinner (Day 8)

Transfer to the airstrip for the return flight to Nairobi. Once you have landed you are met and transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for onward flight arrangements.
