New eco-luxe private island set to open

A new private island is set to open in southern Tanzania’s Shungi Mbili Island Marine Reserve in April. Thanda Island will be available for families and friends on a sole-use basis and is the sister property to the luxurious Thanda Private Game Reserve in South Africa.

The island’s solar-powered beach residence accommodates up to 10 people in five bedrooms, with additional space available for children. Thanda Island is surrounded by its own private coral reef in the Indian Ocean, with activities available including snorkelling and scuba diving, sailing, stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking.

The property’s interiors were designed and decorated by owners Christin and Dan Olofsson, a Swedish couple who have committed to several philanthropy projects throughout Africa. Thanda Island will partner with local organisations on a range of marine conservation and education programmes in the region.

Wildlife encounters include the opportunity to view sharks, which gather just south of the island from October to February. Turtle nesting and hatching can also be seen on the island and guests can learn about the local Swahili sea-faring culture on nearby Mafia Island.

Thanda Island is available for exclusive use for the all-inclusive rate of US$10,000 per night, with a three to seven-night minimum stay depending on season. Inclusions are a team of staff, boat transfers from Mafia Island and most activities, meals and drinks. Spa treatments, diving and some beverages will be available at an extra cost.
