Paradise gained at Vomo Island Fiji

It’s difficult to imagine a more archetypal South Pacific resort than the revitalised Vomo Island. A tropical island paradise, tastefully developed to fit in with the natural beauty, from hilltop lookout to pristine sands, Vomo is like the island location from Central Casting—where the guests are the stars. Relaunched in March 2015, all the villas at Vomo were completely gutted, redesigned and refurbished. Recently named Fiji’s Leading Spa Resort 2015 at the World Travel Awards, Vomo’s facilities once again match its beautiful location, surely one of Fiji’s most enchanting island getaways.

With only 28 villas in the whole resort, the watchwords are privacy, exclusivity and luxury. There are several categories of accommodation, ranging from the Beachfront Villas and Retreats at the shore’s edge to the Villas on the Hill with their sweeping views of island and ocean. All the villas have air-conditioning, complimentary Wi-Fi, direct-dial phones and L’Occitane toiletries.

Apart from the five-star appointments, what I love about Vomo’s Beachfront Villas is the privacy and beach access. I can wake up first thing and, without talking to another soul, walk a few steps to the sand and flop into the warm, clear, refreshing waters of the South Pacific. What an amazing way to start the day, and something I do every morning during my stay at Vomo.

The food at this all-inclusive resort is little short of amazing, with many different tastes and spices. Vomo executive chef Erwin Joven has a reputation for fresh, innovative cuisine and sources his produce from the best domestic and international suppliers, complemented by fresh ingredients from the resort’s own herb and vegetable gardens. The fish is always succulent and full of flavour (there are so many places around the islands where it is overcooked until dry); the wahoo, snapper and tuna expertly prepared and spiced in creative ways. So delicious is the seafood, in fact, that I eat it for lunch, dinner and even as an entree (fresh tuna ceviche or Hawaiian poke).

A short hike to the top of island is rewarded by a 360 degree view and “Kodak moments” at sunrise and sunset. Vomo is blessed with beautiful beaches on both sides of the island. If there is wind on one side, just take a short walk through the “pitch-and-putt” nine-hole golf course and palm trees, and you’re at a calm swimming spot.

For a special occasion with friends or family, Vomo has three secluded, self-contained compounds. The four-bedroom Residence comes with a 24-hour butler, while the three-bedroom Royal has its own private pool. The Beachhouse has three bedrooms, each in its own private pavilion, with ensuite bathroom and an external bathing deck and sun deck, all connected to a living complex that opens onto its own swimming pool. The décor combines Fijian élan with European elegance.

If you want to get away, but not get lost, fear not: WiFi is excellent throughout the island. The gym is on the small side, but well-equipped, and Vomo’s complimentary Kids Village is open daily with distractions including a playroom, media room and cubby house. Children under four must be accompanied by a baby butler or nanny. While Vomo is family-friendly it also affords ample privacy, and there is always the respite of evening drinks in the Vuda Bar – no kids allowed!

Vomo has world-class snorkeling just offshore, but the further out you go, the more varied and colorful the marine life becomes. Guided snorkeling trips leave every morning for one of the reefs surrounding the island, just 10 minutes away. Space can be limited so it’s best to sign up when you arrive. Other activities span paddle boarding, glass-bottom kayaking, windsurfing and daily fish feeding.

And then there’s the Spa…
