On board Luminara, the Ritz-Carlton’s ultra-luxury yacht

The Marina Exterior
On a Mediterranean voyage from Athens to Venice, the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s newest vessel delivers expansive suites, restaurant-level dining and a rarefied, all-inclusive take on life at sea
My server Dyanne places a porcelain bowl containing three mochi dumplings in front of me, each glistening in vanilla syrup and topped with a gilded peanut. “Put the whole thing in your mouth,” she advises. “Or it might explode all over your face.” Heeding the warning, I put one in and bite, and chocolate sauce floods my tongue in a warm burst of sweetness.
This Japanese-inspired dessert is just one of the many gastronomic treats on offer aboard Luminara, the newest addition to the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s trio of luxury superyachts. Alongside Evrima and Ilma, she brings refined Ritz-Carlton hotel experience onto the water, with 226 elegant suites, five restaurants, seven bars, two pools, and a spa and wellness centre. I keep accidentally calling her a ‘ship’, but although we’re cruising the eastern Adriatic from Athens to Venice, Luminara is about as far from your typical cruise ship as an opera house is from a karaoke booth.
This is clear from the moment I step into my room. Not a cabin or even a stateroom, it’s 52 square metres of palatial suite, with a spacious living area clad in natural tones of dark oak and oatmeal, his’n’hers walk-in wardrobes, a marble bathroom with full-sized tub and a veranda where I can watch the sea from my private sunbed.
Wellness on board
Spa treatments on board Luminara include:
FACE: Celestial Black Diamond facial using 111SKIN products for a brighter, sculpted appearance.
BODY: Himalayan stone massage with aromatic oils to relieve stress and recharge spirits.

Gastronomy without boundaries
“Luminara sits somewhere between a luxury hotel and a cruise,” explains general manager Gaudéric Harang. “Everything is designed for guests who have never cruised before and perhaps weren’t comfortable with the concept of cruising.”
We’re sitting not in his office, but in Seta Su Luminara, the yacht’s flagship restaurant, over an eight-course tasting menu designed by Michelin-starred chef Fabio Trabocchi. While we chat, we’re taken on a culinary journey through historic Italy that includes inky-black risotto, wood-smoked langoustine and rosemary-braised wagyu ribeye, each paired with a different Italian wine. “We’ve tried to elevate the dining experience from what you’d find on a regular cruise ship,” continues Harang. “For example, there’s no buffet. Everything is à la carte, with a range of cuisines so you never get bored.”
In Asian restaurant Haesu Bit I gorge on hand-rolled sushi and teppanyaki steak; meanwhile in Azur on Luminara I try locally-inspired dishes like saganaki (fried Greek cheese drizzled with honey) and black cod with tangy tomato ragout. “Don’t worry,” says my server Mackey as she places a wedge of golden tarte tatin in front of me. “There are no calories on board Luminara.”

Wellness that travels with you
Calorie-free dining notwithstanding, it’s good to move after all that eating, and Luminara has you covered. The fitness centre is packed with the latest Technogym machines and there are daily classes including yoga, circuits and spinning. I can’t drag myself out of bed early enough to manage the 7:15am ‘Total Body Energize’, but coach Carlos takes me through a relaxed ‘Evening Stretch’ that eases my weary legs after climbing the 900 steps up to the 18th-century Palamidi Fortress in Nafplio, Greece.
“Although this is a holiday, many of our guests still want to stick to their fitness routines,” reveals spa manager Lorraine Harte. “So the gym is open from 6am to 11pm and class timings fit around shore excursions. But we also have 11 treatment rooms and a wide range of relaxing spa treatments for guests who just want to be pampered.”

After a hectic summer I fall into the latter category, so I opt for Luminara’s bespoke facial. Therapist Lena devises a personalised treatment that addresses my skin concerns (looking tired and sallow) and delivers a heavenly hour of moisturising and massaging that leaves my skin plump and banishes the headache I walked in with. Afterwards, she offers me skincare tips, politely suppressing an eyeroll when I describe my current routine (wash face, slap on moisturiser) and urging me to start exfoliating – which I really should: my new makeup-free glow proves she knows what she’s talking about.

Adventures beyond the bow
While it’s tempting to spend the entire week enjoying the on-board luxury, I didn’t come all this way only to miss our many iconic ports of call on this Mediterranean voyage from Athens to Venice. In Kotor, Montenegro, guide Kiko Marić steers me through the medieval Stari Grad (Old Town), where as well as the magnificent St Tryphon’s Cathedral and the maze of cobblestone alleys, I’m charmed by the many street cats, one of whom hops on my lap as soon as I sit down. “You can pet them,” Marić reassures me. “They’re cared for by a local charity, and in Kotor we believe cats are good luck.”
Later, there are more steps to scale, nearly 1,400 of them this time, up to the historic San Giovanni Fortress. The effort is worth it for the panoramic views of the Bay of Kotor, with Luminara at anchor far below, looking like a glamorous toy ship in a sparkling bathtub.

In Dubrovnik I get more bird’s-eye views but without the climb, thanks to the city’s cable car. From the top, the red tiled roofs of the world-famous Old Town spread out below me; the indigo sea beyond scribbled with white trails from passing speedboats. The exercise comes later: a 1.9-kilometre circuit of the fortified city walls and a tour inside the medieval limestone streets ensure I still get my 10,000 steps in before heading back to the yacht.
Which means I can enjoy those chocolatey dumplings guilt-free, paired, of course, with a glass of French Champagne.
