Five adventures you can only have in Atlantic Canada

In the far reaches of eastern Canada, dramatic landscapes and extraordinary wildlife shape adventures quite unlike anywhere else in the world

To describe Atlantic Canada through a series of nouns and adjectives is to describe an incredible destination. Breathtaking coastlines. Extraordinary wildlife. Charming villages. Finger-licking food.

And while these depictions are not unique to Atlantic Canada, the reality of each scene in this corner of the world is truly unmatched. The North Atlantic has both lapped and lashed these shores for millennia, creating a natural wonderland of rugged cliffs, windswept beaches and untamed beauty.

The region comprises four provinces: the maritime trio of Novia Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, and the two-part province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Each offers spectacular landscapes, fantastic food and rich cultural experiences, but with a definitive local bent. There are also opportunities scattered across the region that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world.

Here, five sought-after experiences that only Atlantic Canada can deliver.

Fogo Island Inn and the spirit of Newfoundland

Off the northeast coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Fogo Island doesn’t fit the standard mould. Without a palm tree in sight, the stark Fogo Island landscape has a dramatic beauty that compels visitors to simply sit and absorb the elemental power. Long winters help set the mood, while the rolling fog – a common and sometimes surprisingly sudden occurrence here – provides a cinematic quality. Likewise, the high chance of whale and iceberg spotting. Weather-worn fishing villages and colour-pop homes dot the coastline, while the bold, architecturally driven Fogo Island Inn provides a front-row seat to nature’s grand show.

Bay of Fundy: The world’s highest tides

Life in Atlantic Canada is shaped by the tides and that is most evident at the Bay of Fundy. Located between New Brunswick and Novia Scotia, the Bay of Fundy is home to the world’s highest tides and the dramatic transformation is a sight to behold. At low tide, visitors can stroll across the ocean floor, weaving between temporarily stranded fishing boats and the famous Hopewell Rocks. Also known as the ‘flowerpots’, this collection of towering, tree-topped sea stacks has been shaped over thousands of years by tidal erosion. Just a few hours later, the mudflats disappear beneath the highest tides on Earth, which reach can reach up to 16 metres. Covering the same ground as at low tide, keen kayakers weave through the narrow rock corridors and hidden coves.

Witless Bay: Where to see Atlantic puffins in Newfoundland

While puffins are found across the North Atlantic, few places combine vast colonies, dramatic coastal scenery and rich marine wildlife quite like Atlantic Canada. The Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, near the harbour city of St John’s in Newfoundland and Labrador, is home to more than 260,000 pairs, making it one of the continent’s largest Atlantic puffin colonies. The reserve is also home to 620,000 pairs of Leach’s storm petrels, the second-largest colony in the world. In season, surrounding waters are frequented by majestic minke and humpback whales, as well as icebergs, while more than 2.5 million seabirds, including common murres, black-legged kittiwakes, and razorbills, gather during breeding season (April to August inclusive).

Cabot Trail: Nova Scotia’s great coastal drive

Novia Scotia, dubbed ‘Canada’s Ocean Playground’, is blessed with more than 13,000 kilometres of coastline, and the Cabot Trail is considered the showpiece. The 300-kilometre stretch attracts road-trippers, cyclist and walkers alike, drawn to its dramatic route along the Atlantic coast and within the Cape Breton Highlands. Visitors are treated to sweeping ocean views, verdant mountain valleys and cliff-hugging bends, while Cape Breton’s living Celtic culture adds character to the journey. In small communities scattered along the trail, fiddlers still gather for late-night ceilidhs, local halls host impromptu performances and seafood dinners stretch into music-filled evenings. Meanwhile, the trail’s artisan loop is dotted with studios and galleries featuring local and handmade art, leather goods, jewellery, metal work and more.

Prince Edward Island’s seafood smorgasbord

Prince Edward Island (PEI) is famed for its striking red-sand beaches and pastoral landscapes. And the culinary spoils of both make the island a gastronomic powerhouse. PEI’s seafood bounty is well stocked with sweet lobster, oysters and mussels, all of which can be enjoyed at the source, or at various cafes and restaurants. Lobster suppers are a PEI institution and the original – New Glasgow Lobster Suppers – has been slinging fresh-as-it-gets seafood since 1958. Traditionally offered nightly during summer, the multi-course lobster supper is built around lobster, ordered by weight, and accompanied by all-you-can-eat sides and signature homemade desserts. Meanwhile, the Fireworks Feast, held each evening at The Inn at Bay of Fortune, is a standout foodie experience that combines understated luxury, provenance and genuine hospitality. The five-hour event comprises a multi-course roving dinner with outdoor kitchens and food stations, live-fire cooking, hyper-local ingredients and fresh produce harvested from on-site gardens.
