Vivid Sydney Partners Up With Pixar Animations for 11th Annual Light Extravaganza

Vivid Sydney enters a new decade of illumination with this year’s 11th annual light festival

Vivid Sydney, the largest light show in the southern hemisphere, will return this winter with the famous festival scheduled to take place 24th May through to the 15th June. Vivid Sydney has become known around the world for its incredible light shows, art exhibits, musical performances, idea workshops and guest speaker programs, and this year it will feature a collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios for the first time.

In a partnership first, the magical light show, curated for all ages, will be displayed at Argyle Cut in The Rocks, where spectators can catch a glimpse of behind-the-scenes production and learn about the evolution of animation. The event will also showcase well-loved Pixar film characters such as Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story.

Destination NSW CEO and Executive Producer of Vivid Sydney, Sandra Chipchase said of the light festival: “It doesn’t matter your age or interest, whether its your first time to Sydney or if you are a local – Vivid Sydney has a universal appeal. The Vivid Sydney 2019 Program offers inclusive and accessible installations, events and experiences that you can enjoy for one evening or over 23 nights.”

Always a highlight of the yearly event is the iconic ‘lighting of the sails’ of Sydney Opera House designed by Los-Angles based artist and filmmaker Andrew Thomas Huang. This year the theme is the Austral Flower Ballet, a tribute to the native flora and fauna of Australia.

This year’s light walk will sees over 50 works curated into the largest outdoor gallery of its kind stretching for more than three kilometres and include KA3323A, a retro-futuristic satellite dish meant to inspire guest about the secrets beyond the stars.
