Sugarloaf, the fine-dining restaurant within Flockhill in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, is conceived as an expression of wilderness refined. With a backdrop of snow-capped peaks and open valleys, the restaurant turns isolation into luxury, inviting guests to dine in one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Southern Hemisphere.

The design is deliberately restrained, allowing the surrounding views to take centre stage. Interiors incorporate stone, timber, and natural textures, echoing the raw beauty outside while creating an atmosphere of intimacy and warmth. The dining room’s floor-to-ceiling windows ensure the environment is ever present, shifting with the light and weather.

Culinary direction is ambitious. Ingredients are sourced from the station’s own land, neighbouring farms and the wider Canterbury region, creating a menu that speaks directly to the terroir. Game, lamb, and seasonal produce form the foundation, while international technique and New Zealand creativity shape the presentation. Each dish is a dialogue between landscape and chef, elevated by a wine program that includes both celebrated New Zealand producers and iconic international houses.

The experience at Sugarloaf is as much about immersion as it is about food. Guests dine in a setting that feels remote yet deeply connected, guided by staff who interpret both menu and environment with care. This is dining as storytelling, with every detail reinforcing a sense of place.

Sugarloaf at Flockhill is a destination restaurant, one that positions New Zealand’s wilderness as the ultimate luxury and dining as the lens through which to experience it.
