The WILDeconomy Masterclass, initiated by &Beyond in collaboration with the African Leadership University (ALU), responds to two key factors. It acknowledges the vulnerability of Africa’s wild places, which can no longer rely solely on tourism for protection – particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Simultaneously, it recognises a growing demand among travellers for interactive experiences that deepen their understanding of destinations and the real-life challenges they face.
The WILDeconomy Masterclass is an educational journey that spans six days and takes place at &Beyond’s lodges in Tanzania and Kenya, shedding light on the role of the wildlife economy in Africa. Guided by experts from ALU, guests explore five key economic activities, including ecotourism, hunting, carbon markets, forest products and game ranching. These activities are integrated into the standard safari experience, fostering discussions and providing curated educational resources.
&Beyond combines luxurious accommodation and exceptional safaris with a focus on these wildlife-based economic activities, aiming to demonstrate that conservation and development can coexist and thrive. The itinerary encourages guests, many of whom are influential, to advocate for Africa’s wildlife economy as a strategic asset that contributes to both the continent’s economy and the protection of its natural resources. As part of this journey, a donation of USD 100 per person is made to the ALU Internship Fund, supporting students’ experiential learning. A trial run with travel journalists took place in November 2022, and the full itinerary is open for bookings in November 2023, with plans for additional themed itineraries in the future.
