ESTE Wategos opens in Byron Bay’s most coveted enclave

ESTE Wategos | Byron Bay
Byron Bay’s newest luxury stay takes a design-led approach to coastal living, where architecture, ocean views and wellbeing come together beneath the iconic lighthouse
Byron Bay has welcomed a new addition to its luxury accommodation scene with the opening of ESTE Wategos, a pair of architecturally designed residences set beneath the town’s lighthouse and overlooking Wategos Beach.
Conceived by co-founders Dr George Bilios and entrepreneur Chris Bissiotis, and designed by Shaun Lockyer Architects, the property reflects a contemporary approach to coastal living – one that balances architecture, nature and wellbeing.

Each of the two three-storey villas features a private rooftop terrace, glass-bottom pool and interiors by Fiona Dunin of FMD Architects, furnished with Australian pieces from Mark Tuckey and Jardan. When booked together, the villas accommodate up to twelve guests, offering space for families or groups while maintaining privacy.
Built by DB Build, the residences are defined by spotted gum finishes, Italian travertine paving and hand-laid stonework that echo the surrounding rainforest and ocean. A central light well links the two villas, filling the interiors with natural light and reinforcing the seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.

ESTE’s guiding philosophy draws on “blue-green space” theory, which explores the restorative effects of being immersed in both water and greenery. “The proximity to the ocean and rainforest isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about creating a space where guests can disconnect, recharge and experience the restorative effects of nature,” said Dr Bilios.

Co-owner Bissiotis added that their travels inspired a desire to create “a tranquil yet luxurious getaway in one of our favourite places”.
