Carbon-neutral luxury safari outfitter Few & Far, which launched just last year, is introducing its first sustainable safari lodge: Few & Far Luvhondo. Situated in South Africa’s remote Soutpansberg Mountains within UNESCO’s Vhembe Biosphere Reserve, the conservation lodge spans 100,000 hectares of rugged wilderness and features six cliffside suites that integrate into the natural landscape, offering uninterrupted views of the valleys below.

Design

The lodge’s design, by Nicholas Plewman Architects and Ohkre Collective, takes cues from the region’s distinctive flora, particularly the towering baobab trees and sprawling sycamores (plane trees). Each suite is elevated to minimise its footprint while maximising airflow, reducing reliance on artificial cooling. Locally sourced materials, including heat-treated eucalyptus processed at an on-site facility, contribute to the lodge’s carbon-conscious construction. The interiors incorporate natural stone, regional textiles, and handcrafted furnishings from local artisans to mirror the hues and textures of the surrounding environment.

Conservation

Few & Far Luvhondo aims to go beyond conventional conservation by actively restoring ecosystems. “Unlike most operators who focus solely on preserving existing conservation areas, we go further by actively enhancing the land’s ability to sequester carbon and by integrating active carbon management with habitat restoration. We’re not just protecting biodiversity – we’re regenerating it, ensuring a lasting impact on the environment and local communities,” stated Sarah Dusek, co-founder of Few & Far.

As a Verra Registered Carbon Project, the lodge is committed to reforesting degraded land, removing invasive plant species and revitalising soil health. These efforts support a range of wildlife, including leopards, pangolins and rare birds, while sequestering over 100,000 tonnes of carbon annually. Guests, too, can participate in hands-on conservation activities, such as tree planting and biodiversity monitoring, through the ‘Conservationist for a Day’ program.

Activities

The lodge also offers a range of activities designed to explore the terrain in low-impact ways. Solfari, an eight-kilometre solar-powered aerial safari, provides an alternative to traditional game drives, gliding over diverse habitats with minimal disruption to wildlife. Guided hikes and e-bike excursions traverse rugged ridges and forested valleys, while night-time sleepouts on a stargazing deck offer an immersive way to experience the landscape. Cultural excursions include visits to Mapungubwe National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and tracking samango monkeys with expert guides.

Few & Far Luvhondo’s culinary program, led by Chef Nhalkanipho Soxhela, focuses on regional ingredients sourced from the lodge’s own farm and nearby producers. The menu highlights seasonal dishes that reflect the diversity of South Africa’s landscapes, accompanied by a curated selection of sustainably produced wines by Sommelier Erica Taylor. Dining experiences range from multi-course bush dinners to traditional boma braais and sundowners overlooking the mountains.

The lodge’s wellness offering includes a meditative labyrinth walk that weaves through the landscape, along with outdoor yoga and guided breathwork sessions that take place in secluded natural settings. The spa uses organic, locally sourced ingredients in its treatments, reinforcing Few & Far’s commitment to minimising its environmental impact.

“In a post-pandemic world, luxury travel has evolved to encompass sustainability, authenticity, and a deeper purpose, and Few & Far Luvhondo represents a bold new approach to this, offering travellers opportunities to engage with local cultures and landscapes while leaving a positive impact,” stated Dusek.

The lodge is set to welcome guests soon, with more details available at fewandfarluvhondo.com.
