Melbourne’s newly opened Hannah St Hotel blends Flack Studio’s layered interiors with art, wellness and a five-venue dining collaboration by The Mulberry Group
Hannah St Hotel has quietly opened in Southbank, positioning itself as a neighbourhood-connected, culture-driven luxury hotel shaped by local design, art and hospitality.
Designed by Flack Studio, the $150 million project occupies a distinctive triangular site near the city’s cultural heart, its form drawing comparisons to New York’s Flatiron Building. Inside, the studio’s layered approach blends nostalgia with contemporary detailing, creating interiors that feel expressive yet lived-in.
“Hannah St Hotel was created to feel connected to its neighbourhood,” says General Manager Peter Minatsis. “From the design to the dining to the small, thoughtful touches in every room, everything has been considered to make people feel welcomed.”

Design shaped by Melbourne
For Flack Studio founder David Flack, the hotel is an exercise in contrast – sharp architectural lines softened by texture, colour and cultural reference. “It’s part grand hotel, part underground bar, part cultural clubhouse,” Flack says, describing a space intended to feel “lived-in, loved, and full of stories”.
That philosophy extends across the hotel’s 188 rooms and suites, each fitted with custom furniture, rich finishes, curated minibars, premium amenities and Marshall speakers. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame skyline views, reinforcing a sense of place within the city.
Wellness, work and gathering spaces
Level 9 anchors the hotel’s shared spaces, designed for connection, creativity and wellbeing. Facilities include a 20-metre indoor pool with city views, steam room, sauna and a fully equipped fitness studio. Co-working areas, including a dedicated podcast room, sit alongside flexible, design-led conference and MICE facilities aimed at business travellers and event planners.
An undercover pool, heated to 25 degrees, allows for year-round swimming – a considered addition for Melbourne’s changeable climate.
Art and culture
Positioned as a cultural hub, Hannah St Hotel features works by Australian artists including Justene Williams and Jazz Money, with curated experiences designed to reflect the city’s evolving arts scene.
The hotel sits within the $500 million Queensbridge development and next to the $1.7 billion Melbourne Arts Precinct transformation, reinforcing its cultural orientation.

Destination dining
A defining feature of the opening is a major hospitality collaboration with The Mulberry Group, the team behind venues including Hazel, Dessous, Lilac Wine, Molli and Heide Kitchen.
Led by founder Nathan Toleman, the group has launched five distinct venues within the hotel: Coupette Corner Bistro & Bar, an all-day European bistro; Hannah St Coffee, a hole-in-the-wall espresso bar pouring Square One Coffee; Bar Hannah and Carriage Lounge in the lobby; and The Terrace Lounge, a rooftop bar and event space with sweeping Southbank views.
“With Hannah St, we wanted to capture that same sense of wonder and excitement, but with a Melbourne heartbeat,” says Toleman. “A place that feels alive, authentic, and inclusive – not just for travellers, but for locals too.”
Together, the hotel’s design, art program, wellness facilities and dining venues position Hannah St Hotel as a culture-focused addition to Southbank’s hotel scene.
Hannah St Hotel is now open.
