Set on the remote Knoydart Peninsula, Kilchoan Estate will mark Dunton’s first European property, pairing restored Highland cottages, inclusive dining and wellness with one of Scotland’s most isolated landscapes
Dunton, the hospitality brand behind Colorado’s Dunton Hot Springs, will make its European debut in June 2026 with Kilchoan Estate, a remote retreat on Scotland’s Knoydart Peninsula.
Set across 13,000 acres between Loch Nevis and Loch Hourn, the estate brings the brand’s low-volume, place-led approach to one of the most inaccessible parts of the Scottish Highlands. Reachable only by boat or on foot, Kilchoan is designed as a year-round base for travellers seeking wilderness, heritage and a more immersive kind of luxury stay.

History
Kilchoan Estate’s history stretches back centuries, with ownership traced to as early as the 12th century. Like much of the West Highlands, the land has been shaped by clan heritage, agricultural life and the long legacy of the Highland Clearances.
The estate is now under the stewardship of Katrin and Christoph Henkel, who have restored the property with a focus on preserving its architectural character and cultural identity, allowing guests to inhabit the landscape and its history more meaningfully. The approach echoes the philosophy behind Dunton Hot Springs in Colorado, where historic buildings were similarly revived as part of a deeply place-based guest experience.

Design
Kilchoan Estate will open with five restored cottages in the northern hemisphere summer of 2026, with two more to follow in early 2027. The cottages range from two to five bedrooms and have been renovated by London-based studio Waldo Works, which also oversaw the recent phased renovation of Dunton Hot Springs.
The design is rooted firmly in the Scottish Highlands, favouring tactility and atmosphere over overt display, allowing the setting to remain the central luxury. Stone, pine and slate create a material connection to the landscape, while interiors draw on the tones and textures of the surrounding coast and hills. Textiles come from British and Irish makers including Bute, Mourne Textiles and the Isle Mill, while furnishings combine bespoke Scottish pieces with restrained European design.

Dining, wellness and experiences
Beyond the cottages, the estate will include a spa with sauna and yoga studio, along with the Long House, a communal lodge where guests gather for meals. Kilchoan Estate will operate as an all-inclusive retreat, with rates covering meals, wines and spirits, and ferry transfers.
Dining will form part of that all-inclusive stay, with tailored in-cottage breakfasts, chef-prepared picnic lunches for days spent exploring, and communal dinners shaped by seasonal produce from the Scottish Highlands. Evening meals will be served communally, giving guests the option to share the day’s discoveries with fellow travellers over dinner.

Destination
Kilchoan’s appeal lies as much in the peninsula itself as in the accommodation. Guests will be able to hike, wild swim, sea kayak, cycle, fish and join guided walks that connect the estate to its ecological and cultural history.
Wildlife is another draw, with opportunities to spot red deer, golden eagles and marine life in the surrounding waters. Kilchoan is also home to some of Britain’s darkest skies, reinforcing the sense of remoteness and tapping into the increasing popularity of both slow travel and astrotourism.

Sustainability
Sustainability is also central to the project. The estate is fossil fuel-free and has been upgraded with energy-efficient heating and cooling systems designed to respect the historic fabric of the site. Partnerships with local groups, including the Knoydart Foundation, help keep conservation, community and heritage at the centre of the experience.
Rates at Kilchoan Estate start from £1,100 per night for two guests, with additional guests from £300 per night.
