Kerry Hill–designed beachfront retreat to reopen as Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast

Mandarin Oriental Desaru Coast
Mandarin Oriental will take over the former One&Only resort on Malaysia’s Desaru Coast ahead of a full rebrand in early 2026
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced its upcoming debut on Malaysia’s Desaru Coast in Johor, with the rebranding of the former One&Only Desaru Coast, set within 128 acres of rainforest fronting the South China Sea. The resort is expected to officially join the Mandarin Oriental portfolio this month, ahead of its full relaunch as Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast in January 2026, when it will join Mandarin Oriental’s regional outposts in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
Designed by the late Kerry Hill, the original One&Only resort opened in 2020 and stands as the final realised work of the acclaimed architect, whose signature tropical modernism is reflected in the harmonious integration of built form with the surrounding rainforest and coastline. The property includes 44 ocean- and jungle-facing suites and villas – many with private gardens and plunge pools – along with five dining venues, a beach club, and a lounge bar overlooking the coast.
A full-service wellness centre will be a cornerstone of the guest experience, featuring The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, yoga pavilion, gym, beauty salon and sports courts. A dedicated Kids’ Club with outdoor playground and nature pond will offer enriching programs for younger guests, and future plans include the development of 40 branded residences. The resort also provides access to two championship golf courses at the nearby Els Club Desaru Coast, designed by Ernie Els and Vijay Singh.
“This is more than a business alignment; it is a bold cultural handshake between two brands – one an established global icon, the other an emerging destination on the rise,” said Karina Ridzuan, Interim Group CEO of Destination Resorts and Hotels. “We are confident this partnership will set a new global benchmark for resort luxury.”
Located in Johor’s tranquil southeast, Desaru Coast is a master-planned luxury travel destination spanning over 1,500 hectares along a 17-kilometre beachfront. It features luxury resorts, a championship golf club, a water park, conference facilities and a curated retail village and is known for its unspoiled beaches, year-round tropical climate and immersive natural surrounds.
