The new under-canvas retreat honours legendary Master Tracker Wilson Masiya with bold design and immersive conservation experiences

A new luxury tented camp has opened within South Africa’s Royal Malewane, offering a fresh take on safari design while paying tribute to one of the region’s most revered wildlife trackers. Masiya’s Camp, named after the late Wilson Masiya, is the latest addition to The Royal Portfolio, a collection of luxury properties owned and operated by the Biden family.

Set in the heart of the Greater Kruger National Park, the under-canvas retreat comprises six luxury tented suites, each designed with expansive living spaces, heated plunge pools and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the surrounding bush. The camp honours Masiya, Royal Malewane’s first Master Tracker and a guiding figure in African conservation. The lodge is now home to three of only eleven Master Trackers in the world.

Guests can expect twice-daily game drives, guided bush walks and access to the Royal Malewane Conservation and Research Centre, including helicopter patrols and demonstrations from the anti-poaching K9 unit.

Designed by Liz Biden, founder of The Royal Portfolio, Masiya’s Camp introduces bold colour and eclectic detail to the safari landscape. The rose-pink tents are inspired by the lilac-breasted roller, one of Africa’s most vibrant birds, while interiors draw from Marrakesh aesthetics, vintage florals and African craftsmanship.

“People associate the bush with beige and neutrals, but nature is full of bold, beautiful colours,” said Biden. “For Masiya’s Camp, we wanted something fresh and exciting – a rose-pink hue reminiscent of the African sand.”

Each of the six tented suites offers expansive indoor and outdoor living spaces with uninterrupted views of the surrounding bush. Interiors feature flowing canvas drapes, floor-to-ceiling glass, and intricately carved Indian and East African doors. Persian rugs, vintage florals and bespoke furnishings are layered with African blues and reds, while Marrakesh-inspired pottery, earthy greens and bold contemporary African art add further depth. Each suite includes a private sala for quiet reflection, a heated plunge pool on the wooden deck, and indoor-outdoor showers designed to connect guests with the landscape.

Dining takes place in a canvas-covered space with a pizza oven, outdoor braai and lounge tent with glass doors and fireplaces. A central bar offers 360-degree bushveld views, and guests gather in the evening around a traditional firepit beneath the stars.

Rates at Masiya’s Camp start from ZAR 52,500 (about AU$4,510) per person, inclusive of luxury accommodation, all meals and beverages, and two daily game drives. The camp is now open for reservations.
