Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot will become the first cruise ship to circumnavigate Antarctica in 2028, offering a once-in-a-lifetime expedition through Earth’s last true wilderness

Luxury expedition cruise company Ponant has announced a landmark polar voyage, set to become a new world first. In early 2028, the cruise line’s celebrated icebreaking exploration vessel, Le Commandant Charcot, will become the first cruise ship to complete a full circumnavigation of Antarctica, covering nearly 18,000 kilometres of the White Continent’s remote and uncharted coastline.

Voyage overview

The voyage will take place between January and March 2028, departing from Ushuaia, Argentina, and travelling westward to Hobart, Tasmania, before returning along the eastern Antarctic coast. The expedition includes a two-day stopover in Hobart and will span a total of 64 days, combining advanced technology, expert navigation and environmental responsibility in one of the world’s most extreme environments.

“This unprecedented itinerary was designed by Captains Etienne Garcia and Patrick Marchesseau,” Ponant confirmed in a statement. “Their expertise in ice navigation at the highest latitudes has made this new sailing dream a reality.”

Ship design and capabilities

Specifically built for polar expeditions, Le Commandant Charcot features a PC2 polar hull and a hybrid electric propulsion system powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) – a first in the industry. The vessel meets the highest international standards for maritime safety and sustainability, and her crew is specially trained in ice navigation.

“Ponant Explorations’ spirit is about those moments of shared awe as we witness the immense forces of nature at play,” said Captain Étienne Garcia. “It’s a privilege to help guests experience how we humbly engage with the elements – the wind, the sea, the ice – bringing us as close as possible to the marvels of the natural world.”

Onboard experience

The voyage is designed to echo the legacy of early polar explorers while embracing modern comfort and innovation. Guests will travel through rarely visited Antarctic regions, some so remote that humans have never set foot there. Onboard, they will be able to explore via Zodiac, kayak, snowshoe hikes, and even take part in polar plunges.

Two onboard scientific laboratories – wet and dry – allow researchers to study water, air, and ice conditions, supported by a new SIMS antenna that continuously monitors ice thickness. As always with Ponant, the ship will serve as a fully autonomous, luxurious basecamp for scientific engagement and immersive travel.

“Today, we want to allow guests to experience the thrill of exploration during the first circumnavigation of Antarctica,” added Captain Garcia. “A land where humans have never set foot, a frozen world yet to be discovered.”
