The UK’s first Six Senses hotel has opened inside the restored Whiteley department store in Bayswater, introducing a 2,300-square-metre spa and the brand’s first urban members’ club as it expands beyond its traditional resort destinations

Six Senses has opened its first UK hotel inside The Whiteley, the historic former department store on London’s Queensway that has been redeveloped as a mixed-use luxury precinct.

Located between Hyde Park and Notting Hill, Six Senses London features 109 rooms and suites, many with private terraces, alongside 14 branded residences.

The opening also introduces the world’s first Six Senses Place, a wellness-focused members’ club designed as a social extension of the brand’s philosophy around wellbeing and connection.

Originally opened in 1911, the landmark building has been restored as part of the wider regeneration of Queensway. The hotel now sits at the centre of the development, which includes private homes, retail and dining venues across an entire city block.

Design

Design studio AvroKO worked with EPR Architects to preserve the building’s Grade II-listed façade while reinterpreting its Art Deco heritage for the hotel.

At the centre of the property is the restored grand staircase from the original department store, reconstructed and extended to rise through three floors beneath a glass-domed ceiling.

Guest rooms combine tall windows, glass rain showers and warm timber finishes, with some suites featuring terraces overlooking the neighbourhood. The Whiteley Suite includes a sprawling 125-square-metre rooftop terrace.

Wellness and facilities

Six Senses London is also home to Six Senses Place, the brand’s new members’ club focused on wellness, talks and cultural programming, which follows the brand’s seasonal “Almanac”, a program of events centred on wellbeing, personal development and community gatherings.

The Six Senses Spa London, meanwhile, spans 2,300 square metres. Facilities include a 20-metre indoor pool, London’s first hotel magnesium pool, a 325-square-metre fitness centre, yoga studios and recovery spaces.

The spa also includes cryotherapy, flotation therapy, red-light therapy and a traditional hammam. A Biohack Recovery Lounge offers treatments such as compression therapy and electro-muscle stimulation.

An integrated Wellness Centre provides consultations focused on sleep, metabolic health and stress management, while the hotel has partnered with the longevity clinic HUM2N to offer advanced diagnostics and IV therapy.

Dining

The hotel’s main restaurant, Whiteley’s Kitchen, Bar and Café, follows the brand’s Eat With Six Senses philosophy, focusing on seasonal and sustainably sourced ingredients. Executive Chef Eliano Crespi and Head Chef Jose Jara lead a vegetable-forward menu that incorporates fermentation and preservation techniques. A dedicated fermentation lab produces house-made ingredients used across the kitchen.

Cocktails are designed to work with or without alcohol, while the wine program highlights British producers alongside independent growers.

Sustainability

Six Senses London operates without single-use plastics and incorporates rainwater harvesting and energy-efficient systems. More than 1,150 square metres of green roof space has also been planted to support biodiversity, while the hotel’s Earth Lab hosts workshops focused on conservation and botanical preparation.

The hotel forms part of the wider redevelopment of The Whiteley, a £3 billion regeneration project that includes residences, retail and hospitality venues across the Bayswater site.

The London opening is part of Six Senses’ gradual move into major cities. Known for nature-based resorts in destinations such as Thailand, Vietnam and the Maldives, the brand has recently expanded its urban portfolio with Six Senses Rome (2023) and Six Senses Kyoto (2024).
