Soho House to open in Australia with Sydney debut

The global members’ club founded in London has announced its Australian debut with the first Soho House set to open in the Harbour City

Sydney has been chosen as the first Australian location for the popular global members’ club, Soho House, with an opening date yet to be announced. Set between Darlinghurst and Surry Hills on Crown Street, the establishment will occupy five floors of an existing building, subject to council approval.

Founded in London in 1995 as a space for creatives to connect and collaborate, Soho House has grown into a coveted members’ club with 42 global locations, alongside a network of restaurants, spas, workspaces, and cinemas.

The news of the Sydney location comes as Soho House prepares for a week-long residency at The Old Clare Hotel from 15 October, as part of the city’s first SXSW cultural festival and conference, which was originally founded in Austin, Texas.

Taking over the ground-floor bar, main restaurant, and rooftop pool of the hotel, located in the city’s Chippendale neighbourhood, the residency will provide Soho House and Cities Without Houses members with access to daily programming and events that are part of the Soho House experience around the world — from a Secret Sounds performance to a One Night Only dining event with British chef, Darren Robertson, and an art installation with Australian artist, Paul Davies.

The brand is also partnering with Women In Music Australia and IMG to bring its Soho Fellowship program to Sydney. The program offers creatives from underrepresented communities a Cities Without Houses annual membership, enabling connection with other creatives in cities where there is no physical Soho House.

Dominique Bellas, Membership Director at Soho House, said “It’s possibly one of the worst-kept secrets, but we’re so excited to confirm that we will be opening a Soho House in Sydney in the future. While we don’t have more details to share at this time, we continue to grow our Cities Without Houses community in Australia and are looking forward to bringing our members a week-long Soho House experience for Sydney’s first South by South West.”
