Go slow in Sri Lanka with Ceylon Tea Trails’ Pekoe Trail Journey
Ceylon Tea Trails – Castlereagh Bungalow
Connecting with the 22-stage Pekoe Trail, the new journey invites guests to stay at three of Resplendent Ceylon’s Tea Trails bungalows while en-route
Ceylon Tea Trails, part of the luxury resort Resplendent Ceylon portfolio, has announced the launch of the Pekoe Trail Journey, an immersive travel experience in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands. This journey connects with the recently established Pekoe Trail, a 300-kilometre, 22-stage walking route that offers hikers the opportunity to explore some of South Asia’s most notable mountain and ecological landscapes. The Pekoe Trail is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka.
Beginning in Kandy, the route passes through key regions including Haputale, Hatton and Ella, before finishing at Nurwara Eliya. Passing through historic tea estates and scenic mountain terrain, the new trail offers a comprehensive experience of the country’s tea-producing regions, and provides accommodation at three of the Tea Trails bungalows.
“In 2005, we transformed tourism in the Central Highlands tea country by introducing the Relais & Chateaux Tea Trails bungalows,” stated Malik J. Fernando, Chairman and Managing Director of Resplendent Ceylon. “These bungalows, connected by walking and biking paths, were known as Tea Trails. The Pekoe Trail builds on this concept, spanning 300 kilometres across the Central Highlands.
“This innovative ‘slow travel’ experience caters to travellers seeking outdoor adventures, conscious travel, and a connection with local communities. It showcases the best of Sri Lanka’s scenery, fresh air, and climate, away from the usual tourist routes.”
Trail Highlights
The Pekoe Trail Journey covers several key stages, each highlighting different aspects of Sri Lanka’s tea region:
Stage 6: Watagoda to Kotagala
This 1.5-hour journey starts at Watagoda Train Station and passes highland lakes, streams, and tea landscapes. Holyrood Estate marks the end of this stage, with Summerville Bungalow as the nearest accommodation option.
Stage 7: Kotagala to Norwood
Beginning in Kotagala, this trail offers views of Hatton and Singamalai Lake and passes the historic Chrysler’s Farm Tea Factory. Summerville Bungalow is recommended for those hiking this stage.
Stage 8: Norwood to Bogawantalawa
This stage climbs a ridge with views of Adam’s Peak and passes through Norwood Estate, leading to Talawakelle town. Norwood Bungalow is suggested for accommodation.
Stage 9: Bogawantalawa to Dayagama
The trail passes the Bogawana Tea Factory and the prominent “Jacob’s Ladder” feature, moving from tea plantations to grasslands. Tientsin Bungalow is the most convenient accommodation for this stage.
