Aspen Snowmass is one of 30 major ski resorts in the western US state of Colorado. Most have excellent snow coverage and well-groomed slopes. The Colorado ski season runs from mid-November to early April, with the prime time being from December to February. March tends to be the snowiest month.

Aspen Snowmass is a renowned ski region established in 1967, encompassing four distinct mountains and a vast expanse of terrain.  With a combined area of over 3,362 acres, the region offers 335 diverse ski trails that cater to all levels of expertise. To access this winter wonderland, skiers and snowboarders can utilise the 42 chairlifts strategically placed throughout the mountains, ensuring seamless exploration of the region’s varied landscapes.

Aspen Snowmass

Four mountains and two towns (Aspen and Snowmass Village) shape the Aspen Snowmass experience. Here’s what the peerless peaks offer.

With an average snowfall of 762cm, Snowmass Mountain has more than 1,448ha of skiable terrain. Families and intermediate skiers love it for its wide and groomed runs while expert skiers are mad about the hike-to terrain. Snowboarders and freestyle skiers are catered to and there is a dedicated kids’ ski and snowboard school.

Aspen Mountain put Aspen on the map. It offers steep and challenging terrain for advanced skiers and snowboarders, including the famous black diamond runs such as Face of Bell, a short, steep drop off an impressive ridge. Aspen also has top-to-bottom groomed options for intermediate skiers and riders and further seduces with stunning views of the town and surrounding peaks.

Break new ground with the newly opened Aspen Mountain terrain expansion, – Hero’s. It is accessible by a high-speed quad chairlift, has increased skiable acreage by more than 20%, with 372m and more than 62ha of new chutes, glades and trails, plus an extension of favourite expert runs such as Walsh’s, Kristi, and Hyrup’s.

Aspen Highlands is the mountain for expert skiers and snowboarders. With its steep and rugged terrain, it’s home to the legendary Highland Bowl, an unforgettable skiing experience that rewards the 45-minute hike to get there. Highlands also has a variety of intermediate and beginner runs.

Buttermilk Mountain is the smallest of the four mountains and is known for its beginner and intermediate terrain. It’s a great mountain for families and beginners to learn on and improve their skiing and snowboarding skills. Buttermilk is also home to the Winter X Games, one of the biggest winter sports events in the world.

Art for art’s sake: Building on Aspen’s history of vibrant arts and culture, Art in Unexpected Places is a program that activates artistic expression in the mountains and beyond. Previous projects have included public performances, installations, limited-edition lift tickets, and participatory artworks by noted contemporary artists.

The resort has many galleries, museums, and theatres. The Aspen Art Museum is a must-visit for contemporary art enthusiasts, while the Wheeler Opera House hosts a variety of concerts, plays, and comedy shows.

Winter wellbeing: The Spa at The Little Nell is the region’s sole ski-in, ski-out spa, its holistic lifestyle philosophy celebrating active pursuits, the feel-good effects of Mother Nature, and the integration of mind, body and spirit. Treatments offer an integrated approach to wellness that revolves around those three therapeutic pathways, with remedies targeting the altitude, adventure, and high-performance living.

A slice of Switzerland: Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro, a cozy, European-style cabin whose backdrop is the iconic Maroon Bells, is a highlight of any Aspen Snowmass vacation. Come for the fondue and stay for the après DJ and Champagne. Lunch service feels like a slice of Switzerland in the Rocky Mountains, what with all that fondue and raclette as well as steak tartare, caviar and daily specials. The wine list is international. The dessert is … strudel!

Aspen’s Michelin star: Last year, Aspen’s Bosq joined three Denver restaurants — Beckon, Brutø, and The Wolf’s Tailor — along with Boulder’s Frasca – as the only dining establishments in Colorado to earn a Michelin star. It’s the first time the guide has covered Aspen and Snowmass Village, Boulder, Denver, the town of Vail, and Beaver Creek Resort. The intimate eatery is run by James Beard Award-nominated chef Barclay Dodge and his wife, Molly. Hours before the official ceremony, the Michelin Guide nominated Bosq’s lobster, grilled over juniper branches with buttermilk and dill, as one of their inspector’s favourite dishes in Colorado.
