Queenstown’s quietest luxury stay is built around the art of rest

ROKI Collection | Brunswick Suite Balcony | Queenstown, New Zealand
Queenstown may be famed for jetboats and bungy jumps, but ROKI Collection slows the tempo with a spa-centred stay where rest and ritual take centre stage
Most hotels have a spa – something tacked on between check-in and cocktails. But ROKI Collection Queenstown, a new 15-suite hideout near Lake Wakatipu, feels like a spa that happens to have a hotel wrapped around it. The name ROKI (pronounced roh-kee) signals its intent – drawn from Māori culture, it means ‘tranquillity’. But this isn’t a wellness retreat. There’s no sunrise yoga, no week-long detox, no White Lotus-style theatrics. Rather, it’s a luxury stay planted in the middle of New Zealand’s adrenaline capital, designed for just one thing: rest. And that’s the plot twist.
I arrive by Rolls-Royce (because why not?) and am encouraged to dip my hands in water and glide them over a dark, milky-green pounamu stone, a grounding ritual that sets the tone for the stay. No one is in a hurry here – even the staff move at half-speed, leading me down to my suite, which shares a floor with Pure, the spa, which I quickly discover is so much more than that.
By the time I reach my room, the edges of my travel stress are already softening. The palette is muted, the furniture low and inviting, and the bed looks like it could swallow me whole. I kick off my shoes and glide to the window to drink in the view of The Remarkables. Outside, a shark-shaped jetboat thrashes across Lake Wakatipu. But inside, it’s still.

Mountain rituals
The next morning, instead of hurling myself off a bridge or carving down a mountain, I lay face down on a warm bed while Loréne Doira, ROKI’s wellness director, waves Pure’s signature scent under my nose: a blend of cedarwood, clove, tonka and blackcurrant. “Breathe,” she whispers three times. “Breathe.” With deadlines looming and my own destination wedding approaching, I suspect she can sense just how tightly wound I am. “Breathe.” I inhale, and my muscles sink into the mattress as hot stones glide along my back, easing tension from my lower spine to my shoulders, smoothing out the knots like air bubbles. With each subtle pop, I melt deeper.
Doira leads me through each stage of my ‘Breathe’ ritual, from massage to facial, until my thoughts blur, drift, and finally vanish for two and a half blissful hours. To extend the reset, the spa also has a sauna, pool and cold plunge, perfect for a pre- or post-treatment soak.

“Our guests already have their own skincare routines, so we want to offer something they can’t get at home,” explains Doira. “They’re busy, constantly in demand, often restless. Here, it’s about giving them the rest their bodies are asking for.”
There’s the ‘Remedy’ ritual, which focuses on a circadian reset, with slow exfoliation, a magnesium massage to draw fatigue from the legs, then breathwork, tuning forks and rhythmic rocking until the body is primed for sleep. For the jet-lagged or overworked, ‘Energise’ layers an infrared wrap with massage and lymphatic drainage for a deeper reset.

The curated sleep
The wellness sanctuary doesn’t stop at the door. Pure has a partnership with The Tides, a Netherlands-based brand known for science-backed therapies for body, mind and brain. “We’re the only ones in New Zealand with this partnership,” Doira says, revealing that they will soon offer a one-of-a-kind treatment in a remote nearby landscape, accessible only by helicopter.
For now, I get a taste of that partnership right in my suite. On the bathroom counter, Tides-branded bath salts, a liquid ‘chill pill’, magnesium drops and a pillow mist are laid out like a step-by-step guide to sleep, complete with instructions. The Eyeris 3 – a spa-inspired eye massager that uses gentle heat, light pressure, and music to help melt away tension – is also included in the ‘Sleep Reset’ ritual; one of three in-suite experiences designed to untangle everything the day has knotted up. Meanwhile, for the truly restless, a personal sleep concierge is on call.
…we want to offer something they can’t get at home. They’re busy, constantly in demand, often restless. Here, it’s about giving them the rest their bodies are asking for.

For me, the bath soak alone is enough to unwind completely. I spritz the ‘Peace Out’ mist over my pillows and bedding, then rub two pumps of the chill pill into the soles of my feet. On the bedside table sits a raspberry madeleine with a handwritten note from chef Paul Froggatt, ROKI’s culinary director: “A sweet treat to help ease your mind and soothe your senses… may your evening be restful and your dreams serene.”
I savour the moreish bite, then sink into the bed like a marshmallow. The quiet settles over me. If Queenstown is about pushing your limits, then ROKI is about finding your centre.
