Unique Antarctic expedition offers once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters
White Desert announces exclusive Early Emperors tour for 2024 for wildlife and adventure enthusiasts
White Desert has announced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for adventurous travellers with its 2024 Early Emperors tour. The unique expedition allows participants to witness majestic emperor penguins in their natural habitat alongside breathtaking Antarctic landscapes.
Guests joining the Early Emperors tour in November 2024 will journey to the remote, pristine Atka Bay. On the edge of the Antarctic ice shelf, Atka Bay is home to one of the largest emperor penguin colonies in the world. The tour offers a close-up view of these remarkable creatures during their early breeding season, a period rarely witnessed by the public.
White Desert’s CEO, Patrick Woodhead, emphasised the tour’s uniqueness: “We are thrilled to offer our guests the extraordinary opportunity to observe emperor penguins in their early breeding season. This is a rare chance to see 14,000 breeding pairs nurturing their newly hatched chicks in one of Earth’s most remote and beautiful places—a spectacle full of noise and energy that is a favourite with wildlife watchers, enthusiasts and photographers.”
The itinerary includes a scenic flight from Cape Town across the Southern Ocean, where guests can experience the Antarctic summer’s continuous daylight. After landing on the Wolf’s Fang ice runway, guests are transferred to White Desert’s luxurious flagship eco-camp, Whichaway Camp. This camp features state-of-the-art sleeping pods, gourmet dining, and a range of amenities designed to minimise environmental impact while maximising guest comfort.
Here, guests can participate in activities such as treks to see ice waves, summiting a nunatak, exploring ice tunnels, ice climbing, and abseiling. These activities are designed to provide a comprehensive Antarctic experience, combining wildlife encounters with adventures in the continent’s stunning landscapes.
On day 3, a short flight features views of the High Polar Plateau before landing at the Emperor Penguin colony at Atka Bay. Guests will embark on guided excursions led by experienced polar guides and wildlife experts who will provide insights into the lives of emperor penguins and the Antarctic ecosystem. Participants can closely observe and photograph penguin chicks and witness the colony’s intricate social dynamics.
With its unique combination of luxury, adventure, and wildlife encounters, White Desert’s Early Emperors Tour allows wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers to experience the wonders of Antarctica sustainably and responsibly.
The tour underscores White Desert’s commitment to responsible tourism. The company adheres to strict environmental guidelines to ensure tours don’t disturb the delicate ecosystem. All activities are conducted with the utmost respect for the wildlife and natural surroundings, and efforts are made to minimise carbon footprint using sustainable technologies and practices.
The tour is limited to a small number of guests to ensure an intimate, personalised experience. This exclusivity also helps to minimise environmental impact and preserve the pristine environment.
