Lake Como’s Passalacqua unveils new spa in historic tunnels

Passalacqua unveils a brand-new spa, carved out in the villa’sv18th century tunnels, in partnership with Seed to Skin Tuscany.

Passalacqua, a luxurious 24-suite hotel crowned the Best Hotel in the World in 2023, has revealed its latest addition – a new spa set in the villa’s 18th-century tunnels originally built by Count Lucini Passalacqua in the late 1700s.

The hotel, which opened in June 2022 after a three-year restoration, is owned by the De Santis family, known for the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. The villa stands above the village of Moltrasio, with seven acres of terraced gardens sweeping down to the lake’s shore.

Designed by Venelli Kramer studio, the new Passalacqua Spa preserves the villa’s historical essence while revitalising its underground spaces. Guests enter through a hall of columns featuring granite structures and Yahya’s chandeliers. Surrounded by warm wood panelling and Viennese straw panels, this relaxation area provides a serene environment enhanced by soft lighting.

A 50-metre walk through atmospheric tunnels lit by pierced lamps crafted by Bronzetto reveals a dark fir sauna, a grey marble Mediterranean steam bath, and an onyx shower, all integrated into the Moltrasio stone surroundings.

What was once an 18th-century delivery road is now an enchanting path that runs along the entire length of the Scala Santa of Moltrasio and connects to each of the hotel’s terraced gardens. A spacious atrium with a balcony overlooking the first Italian garden terrace has been transformed into a tearoom and intimate lounge, perfect for meditation and rejuvenation.

The new 18-metre indoor pool is located in an ancient greenhouse and features a Palladian marble mosaic with stones cut and laid by hand. The pool area includes a whirlpool and views of the Italian garden designed by Emilio Trabella, extending towards the lake and mountains.

Passalacqua has partnered with the skincare line Seed to Skin Tuscany to create a curated spa menu that includes treatments and rituals for a unique wellness experience. Guests can also enjoy massages in a new outdoor pavilion designed by Guido Toschi in the hotel’s orchard.

Passalacqua continues to offer luxury and historical charm, with rates starting from €1,500 per night, excluding taxes.
