A new A&K Sanctuary camp will place guests directly on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni

Samkani Camp – five architect-designed Airstream suites on the Salar de Uyuni – will open in late 2027 as part of A&K Sanctuary’s boutique lodge and camp collection. It will be among the few places in the world to offer overnight accommodation directly on the world’s largest salt flat, positioned 20 to 30 kilometres from any other human presence

A&K Sanctuary, the boutique lodge, camp and riverboat collection from A&K Travel Group, has announced plans for Samkani Camp on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, a five-suite camp built entirely from Airstreams and set to open in late 2027. The camp’s name is drawn from the Aymara language of Bolivia’s Altiplano, where “Samkani” translates as “the one who dreams.”

The Salar de Uyuni spans approximately 12,000 square kilometres of salt flat, shifting through the year from a cracked mosaic of hexagonal salt tiles to a reflective mirror plain. Overnight accommodation directly on the salar is rare, and Samkani Camp’s placement well beyond any other settlement will make it among the most remote places to sleep in South America.

Design and accommodation

The camp’s design draws on A&K’s experience running low-impact mobile camps in Africa, adapted for the exposed conditions of the Bolivian Altiplano. Each of the five Airstream suites is designed to be self-sufficient, with a metal exterior that takes its cues from the surrounding salt and sky. Inside, the suites will be fitted with blue Bolivian marble and chrome detailing. A sixth Airstream will anchor the centre of the camp as a dining room and bar.

Experiences

Each stay will include a private guide and driver, with more than 30 experiences available across the salar, some offered exclusively to Samkani Camp guests. These will include visits to the salar’s islands and volcanic caves, as well as guided stargazing beneath some of the clearest skies in the Southern Hemisphere, where the Milky Way is visible in exceptional clarity. All excursions will be led by A&K’s Bolivian team.

Samkani Camp will be bookable as part of an A&K Tailormade journey or Small Group Journey to Bolivia. An on-sale date is yet to be announced.
