The new turndown: how luxury hotels are turning nights into rituals

Bedroom in Six Senses Yao Noi
Once little more than a plumped pillow and a square of chocolate, turndown is becoming one of luxury travel’s most expressive rituals – from sleep-focused wellness touches to thoughtful keepsakes rooted in place
It was my final night at TIA, a lush oceanfront wellness resort in Da Nang City, Vietnam. After a stroll through the beautifully frenetic streets of Hoi An, I returned to my villa confident there would be a surprise waiting for me.
On night one, it was a bracelet of mala beads, a recurring motif throughout the resort. Night two; a deck of affirmation cards – ‘I am creatively inspired by the world around me’ says one, ‘I am growing more connected with my soul’ says another.
Each gift is aligned with the property’s wellness ethos and night three is no different. Two paper lanterns, two tealight candles, a box of matches and, importantly, some guidance: ‘Make your wishes come true by writing them down, placing them in this lantern, lighting a candle and floating it atop your villa pool. Dream big!’
It was the perfect idea. A gentle farewell in keeping with the mood of the stay. And an invitation to lean into possibilities.

Rest, reimagined
In a landscape where luxury is increasingly defined by nuance rather than scale, the once-standard turndown ritual has become a point of difference. It is intimate, it is sensory and, done well, it expands on a story.
As evidenced by TIA, turndown has become a vehicle for wellbeing at many luxury properties, buoyed both by global trends and human needs.
At Ananda Spa in the Himalayas, the evening ritual is beautifully considered and reflects the property’s commitment to holistic wellbeing. Turndown begins with a Dinacharya Kit, comprising a tongue scraper, oil for pulling, soothing nasal drops and a restorative foot oil, designed to encourage balance and restorative sleep. A selection of wholesome snacks, and bespoke pillow and bath menus, complete the luxuriously layered approach.
In Bali, the turndown ritual at Escape Haven changes each evening and might include a bedtime tea ceremony, restorative foot bath with salt scrub, or sleep companion device with curated sound healing frequencies and guided breath rhythms.
Escape Haven founder Janine Cottle says: “For 18 years we have been championing the power of rest. Women don’t just need time off. They need nervous system repair. Our nightly turndown rituals are not a luxury. They are a return to the body.”
In the Austrian Alps, Forsthofgut Nature Hotel offers bookable turndown options, including the Restful Sleep turndown, which includes an aroma roll-on, scented pillow spray, premium silk sleep mask and a Good Night Mountain tea, all aimed at quality rest and recovery.

At the Regent Hong Kong, day to evening rituals play out at various touchpoints. In rooms and suites, the turndown is themed ‘Renew and Rest’ and the daily rotation of gifts includes a Perricone MD radiance-boosting face mist, restorative eye mask, hydrating hyaluronic treatment and softly scented diffuser stones.
Also rotating daily, the turndown menu at Thailand’s Six Senses Yao Noi includes a small-batch sleep balm and lip balm, created in the property’s Earth Lab, as well as a foot scrub, prepared at the spa’s Alchemy Bar. In fact, each of the turndown amenities showcases the work of different departments across the resort and uses either local ingredients or upcycled materials.
Local charm
Some of the most compelling turndown rituals are those that feel anchored in place. They wouldn’t make sense elsewhere, but are perfect right where they are.
At Conrad Punta de Mita, Mexico, the nightly turndown honours ancient customs of Huichol culture through gifts sourced from local artists and vendors by the hotel’s Director of Housekeeping, Joel Lopez.
As Lopez explains, each object “serves as both a keepsake and a narrative anchor” – a whale tail, for example, helps tell the story of the region’s magnificent wildlife migrations, a manta ray is a sacred symbol of strength and transformation, a piñata represents the destruction of evil and new beginnings.

“The Huichol (Wixárika) people are the heart and soul of this region, and their artistry, mythology and worldview reflect a deep spiritual connection to the land and sea,” says Lopez. Guests of The Dylan Amsterdam return each evening to a new chapter in a week-long narrative that echoes the city’s craft and culinary heritage. A handwritten note and carefully chosen playlist, a miniature Dutch Klompje (wooden shoe), a legendary Van Stapele cookie, a bespoke Dylan gate keychain – each a meaningful and destination-driven gesture.
In Santorini, Andronis properties have given the tried-and-tested sweet treat an upgrade. As well as a premium chocolate morsel, guests will find a thoughtful collection of amenities that speak to the island’s soul: a vial of spa oil to promote calm and balance, a Santorini-themed crossword, a mini dictionary to help master a few local phrases and nightly bookmarks featuring quotes from ancient Greek philosophers. There is also a retro-style coaster (for guests to keep, naturally) with a QR code that links to the Andronis Record Collection (ARC) on Spotify, a curated playlist designed for dreamy island evenings.

In the heart of Venice, Violino d’Oro is a celebration of local craftsmanship from check-in to check-out and, for turndown, the hotel partners with local artisans to create magic. Picture frames crafted from Murano glass and murrine (patterned glass), made by hand using generations-old techniques, are among the most prized of the hotel’s turndown offerings.
Flemings Mayfair gives a nod to the literary renown of its London locale when it comes to turndown, gifting guests of the newly redesigned three-bedroom townhouse a copy of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Wilde once lived and found inspiration on Half Moon Street, where Flemings now resides.
Turndown gifts at Shinta Mani Mustang, Nepal, are handpicked to reflect the people and places key to the guest experience: a handcrafted apple crochet is inspired by Marpha Village, the Apple Capital of Nepal; the Buddhist prayer flag is blessed by local monks; the humble walnut from Lubra Bon Village represents 800 years of local wisdom.
Shinta Mani Mustang General Manager, Minga Tashi Sherpa, says: “Because guests have already experienced the places behind these items, the objects become deeply personal. They are not souvenirs; they are reminders of human connection, cultural exchange and moments of reflection. This emotional layering is what makes them so powerful.”
Amanera, located on the Dominican Republic’s exquisite north coast, takes a similar approach: scented candles; a Palo Santo wood scent; handcrafted wooden sculptures inspired by the local Taíno heritage; and a rare larimer gemstone, found only in the Dominican Republic all speak to a sense of place.
An intangible touch
Not all turndown touches are designed to be taken home. In fact, some of the most memorable are those that exist only in the moment.
A picture paints a thousand words at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, where turndown is curated by the property’s Aris Meeha (island butler) with an emphasis on personalisation. Among the most popular expressions is a hand-drawn chalk artwork created outside each villa, inspired by the guest’s experiences that day.

The turndown concept at Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, meanwhile, takes an experience-led approach. Each evening, the housekeeping team transforms each room into a private sanctuary and cues a curated wellness loop – think meditation, light yoga or sound healing – on the in-room television.
A Good Night Guide, launched at Hotel Belmar, Monteverde, in January 2026, directs guests to a 10-minute guided meditation or Yin Yoga session via QR code, while the accompanying herbal tea blend combines sleep-inducing botanicals harvested in-house or from Costa Rica’s first certified carbon-neutral farm, Finca Madre Tierra.
By design, these moments are fleeting. But their impact lingers, and it is precisely that afterglow that distinguishes the new turndown.
